Seven teens are chosen for Project Quarters, a new mental health study done nationally to determine whether or not peer therapy is more effective than psychologists.

Early drafts included suicide pacts, school shootings, sex and drug addiction, a group of former abusers, and many other possible group ideas before teen therapy was chosen. Former titles include T-Doc, Buckle, Bingos, and Kill-Off.

The character of Cadence Thomas was written specifically for Dahlia Johnson after her audition. Originally, romance was supposed to ensue between Lark and Jude, but Cadence was written in as romantic fodder instead.

Nearly every single actor auditioned for a different character than they were cast in. Derick Trost, Ky Manzer, and Patrick Craig all auditioned before the character list has been announced (and therefore had no specific character in mind,) Dahlia Johnson and Casey Caplin both auditioned for the role of Wallace (Caplin also auditioned for Lark,) Camilla Ditton auditioned for Jude, Lyric Bowman auditioned for Amelia, and Tiana Jones, Davey, and Alison Doyle did not audition.

Cadence Elizabeth Thomas was named as a reference to the writer/creator, Lyric Elizabeth Bowman. Additionally, Lark's and Cadence's last names are Thomas and Jefferson, respectively, as a tongue-in-cheek nod to their destined relationship.

Quarters was originally scheduled for a fall 2015 release. However, after controversy erupted over the casting of Camilla Ditton, a cisgender female, as Jude Clarke, a trans male, the series was delayed. Rewrites occurred, and Ditton took on the role of Amelia, while Ky Manzer was cast as Jude.

The characters in Quarters represent many varied sexualities. Amelia is heterosexual, Ansel is bisexual, Cadence and Lark are homosexual, Jude is pansexual, Wallace is asexual/aromantic. Only Rory is unconfirmed.

While the characters of Randi Sloan and Lark Jefferson are both 16, Lyric Bowman and Alison Doyle were 19 and 20 (respectively) at the time of filming episode 8.

The cast's age range spanned almost two decades, including the Officiator. However, the oldest actor to appear onscreen is Tiana Jones (Aria Thomas,) at 23 years old. Camilla Ditton (Amelia Piper) is the youngest, at 15.

Alison Doyle, Davey, and Tiana Jones appear in guest spots, and did not audition. They are all personal friends of the director, Lyric Bowman, and were asked to help as a favor to her. Additionally, Camilla Ditton is a friend of Bowman's, but was asked to submit a monologue because she was auditioning for a recurring character.

Lyric Bowman, Casey Caplin, Kadi Brazil, and Poncho Ortega all worked together previously on the series "The Veronica Exclusive," as Martha, Veronica, Heather Chandler, and the editor, respectively. Additionally, Patrick Craig, Camilla Ditton, Dahlia Johnson, and Derick Trost were given guest spots in episode seven of TVE, as Heather Chandler fans.

Casey Caplin, Kadi Brazil, and Ky Manzer are all costars in the series "Happily Never After Vlogs." Brazil also stars with Lyric Bowman in "Friends of the ABC." These series, along with Quarters, all air as part of StreamVaudeville, a YouTube theatre troupe.

Bowman was originally hesitant to write in a sexual relationship between Randi Sloan and Lark Jefferson, as she did not want to show under aged children in sexual situations. However, after long deliberation, she decided to include it because "kids have sex at sixteen. It's maybe not the best, but it's a fact. To cut out that part of Lark's life and grief over her breakup seemed like a moot point, especially after already delving so deeply into Lark's psychological problems."
