» » Sabrina, the Teenage Witch First Kiss (1996–2003)

Short summary

A Valentine's Day episode shows that while dating is tough when you're a teenager, it's even tougher when you're a teenage witch. Just as Sabrina and Harvey are about to share their first kiss, Salem desperately interrupts them. Sabrina's cat isn't trying to be a pest, and no, he's not jealous; rather, the feline knows that a kiss from Sabrina will turn Harvey or any boy for that matter into a frog. In order to reverse the tragic spell, Sabrina must pass the Witches' Council's "Test of True Love" to prove that her feelings for Harvey are genuine.

In this episode, Zak tells Sabrina that she looks like a blonde Audrey Hepburn and that his favorite Hepburn film is Sabrina (1954). In the season one to three opening credits, one of the looks which Sabrina adopts is modeled on Holly Golightly's outfit from Frühstück bei Tiffany (1961). Holly Golightly is Hepburn's most iconic role.

20 years from this episode. One of my top favorites from the whole series. It truly signifies Valentine's Day, and how better with Harvey/Sabrina? From the Dating Game until the bridge on fire, it was such an entertaining episode and of course full of romance. Young love! Their kiss (or kisses, they couldn't get enough after they were able to kiss freely) This episode demonstrated in that moment and 7 years later, how magic and the heart had always worked together to show their true love to each other. I understand they were too young (and probably too soon) to say those 3 words to each other, but actions say more than words, in my opinion. Although, I doubt a little bit about fidelity from Sabrina over the series, but I'd think that it was her heart which was always loyal to Harvey. Sabrina/Harvey forever and ever.

Sabrina is a show who's theme's are as rooted in its demographic as they are their titular character. The first kiss, virginity's more family friendly younger brother, is a much anticipated event for teens the world over (bar theocracies or areas in which an ambitious social experiment has made it impossible in return for immortality). I remember wondering would it ever happen to me. I felt infinitely late for the ribbon cutting on my adulthood but I think everybody did.

It is valentines day and Harvey is no longer happy with he and Sabrina's love living in their childhood's and he has given himself the loft deadline of the end of the day. He is lucky because Sabrina reciprocates but they are foiled by moralities magic envoy once again. Sabrina is informed that if she kisses Harvey there is a 50/50 chance he will turn into a frog that is unless.... it is true love.

The episode reflects well our basic mistrust of other people, Our suspicion that we can never truly know some one and the catholic notion that love without heart is treacherous.

It made me sad that I do not have through love but hopeful that at least that the possibility of it might exist. I wanted to say something humorous about it but as always with these episodes I am transported back to when I was seven years old. How did things become so vile?
