Materia oscura tells the story of a war zone in peacetime. The film location is the Salto di Quirra test range (Sardinia, Italy) where, for over fifty years, governments around the world have tested 'new weapons' and where the Italian government has carried out controlled explosions of old weapon stocks, inexorably endangering the territory. Within this context the film comprises three movements.

The question with movies/documentaries like this, that the viewer faces, when he has to rate them or talk about them, is will he/she rate the style of the movie or the story behind it/what it tries to tell? The movie at hand here, has a noble cause to say the least. It tries to point to something very wrong going on. There is of course many things "going wrong" around the world, so this concentrates on one of those things which plays out in Italy.

Though the filmmakers don't think it is necessary to bore you with audio and or some background knowledge (from time to time that is) or sometimes they only give you ambient sound. While that can be devastating (in more than one sense) it's also not as engaging as it could be. They try to make it different than other movies/documentaries and in that they succeed. But do they succeed in people taking notice. Maybe they just don't care?
