Short summary

Camille Preaker, a reporter for the St. Louis Chronicle, is sent to her rural hometown to cover a story about two missing girls, one of whom was found dead.

Towards the end of this episode, Adora is visibly listening to Danish pianist Agnes Obel, and even has her vinyl on visible display. Obel was previously an instrumental part of the soundtrack for Big Little Lies (2017), also an HBO series directed by Jean-Marc Vallée.

Amy Adams was originally cast in Dark Places (2015), another work by Gillian Flynn, but was replaced by Charlize Theron.

Amy Adams and Chris Messina were a couple previously on Julie ja Julia (2009).

In the scene where Camille meets Amma in their house, she is invited to see Amma's doll house. As the camera rests on the doll house, on the second floor is a picture frame on a wall. The words "GIRL" is visible on the frame for a split second and when the camera refocuses again in that area of the doll house, the words disappear. This could possibly be a hint to describe "gone girl" which was another Gillian Flynn novel.

Episode one was very solid. You were given some information on Camille, played wonderfully by Amy Adams, and her flashbacks leave you wanting more. I can't wait to see how it all works out!

A perfect slow burn, chilling Gothic atmosphere, and Amy Adams gave the best performance for a hard-boiled and damaged character since Casey Afleck's in Manchester By the Sea. There were a lot of haunting and torturing memories that I didn't need because I think Adams reactions were enough to give Camille a lot of depth. Nevertheless, some of these memories seem to have some important clues.

This is an excellent introduction. The characters, cinematography, and overall writing made the hour run time feel like mere minutes.

WOW. I already want more of this, it's a mix of excellent performances by the large list of impecable stars, a great soundtrack wich helps to feel what the characters are feeling. This is a perfect way to start!.

People calling this a slow-burn aren't wrong. Obviously it isn't possible to have a character driven story like this without it taking its time to develop and evolve the characters. That's literally what character driven means. Driven by characters, hence following/exploring their lives. That said, I have absolutely no idea how some are talking about this being too slow even for a story meant to be that? Having read the novel, I'm utterly surprised by how much they crammed into just this pilot, I'm actually kind of afraid they'll run out of content before halfway through. We got around so many scenes and storylines that I felt filled out 1/3 of the book. IMO, this episode was very well fast-paced and completely without feeling rushed. It's all due to the top-notch cinematography, well-written dialogue and acting as good as one can hope for in this difficult genre, where everything easily gets over-the-top or totally dull. The only thing I didn't like were a few parts of the soundtrack, especially the one they played in the official trailer and several times throughout this episode. I get why they chose it, because it does make you feel like you're on drugs and experiencing creepy s#!%, which the story is all about. Somehow it still feels out of place to me like it'd rather belong on Big Little Lies. People do make a lot of comparisons between BLL and Sharp Objects, but honestly if you really know what SO is about, you'll realize it's a whole lot darker and a whole lot more of raw psychological crime/thriller than the rather "lighter" girlpower melodrama BLL is (coming from someone who mostly enjoyed BLL). So please, let not this 80s melodrama-chick-flick-on-steroids song stick around throughout all episodes like, it gave me PTSD throughout this episode. Seriously, every time someone opened a door and it gave that "ring" sound which sounded exactly like the one in the song, my nerves got racked 'cause I thought they'd play the song again.

Obviously otherwise 10/10! Made this sound a whole lot worse than it was, the episode was close to a perfect first-episode adaption of a novel, and I loved it so much. Thank you!

Special kudos to: Eliza Scanlen for stealing the show every time she was on screen, even next to pros like Adams and Clarkson. Perfect line deliveries and a great kickstart to a creepy and intriguing character.

Its impossible not to compare "Sharp Objects" to the massively successful "Big Little Lies" and while the story line of the two shows might be completely different, there is enough surrealistic direction to draw comparisons. Jean-Marc Vallee is an amazing director and how he weaves every shot is nothing short of astounding- the present and the past in this show are connected by a very thin line which adds to the mystifying feel of the series.

Amy Adams is no doubt one of the most talented actress of out generation and here too she shines. The bigger surprise however for me was Sophia Lillis who plays Adams' younger version- without saying much, her expressions reveal it all. The show also reminded me of the excellent film "Dolores Clairbone" in which too a journalist is sent to her estranged town- but this show is greatly creepier.

Overall, it was a great pilot and one that has me hooked to the series!

The title does not really come into play until that final moment, or does it.

I appreciate Amy Adams joining the TV foray, I appreciate HBO giving us another edgy drama, but it is a little slow for my taste. Sometimes people automatically assume a show is "good" when it moves at a snail pace, but I don't think this needs to do this.

It sort of felt like a rejected premise for True Detective season 3.

I am curious to see where it goes, but I think people are highly overrating the pilot.

I just want to know if that's what it says st the end when she's in the tub. I'm also a fan of the slow pace, it goes with the place she grew up in. Nowhere to go and nothing to do. So the pace is causing tension for the audience and the characters that want out. Very cool show.

Very well done and good acting but not much happened. Doesn't seem like anything groundbreaking from stuff that has been done before.

    Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is a character driven miniseries created by Marti Noxon that depicts an emotionally challenged reporter whose current project or case has got her into revisiting her hometown and past that eventually spirals out series of dreadful events. It is rich on technical aspects like stunning background score, metaphorical cinemotography, fine art designing and perfect editing. The camera work is something to look forward to as it is shot beautifully with amazing visuals that seeks viewers' attention through it. The three dimensional characters, eerie resonance with practicality and its tendency to go mild with a shock-and-awe policy are the high points of the series. The adaptation by Gillian Flynn; who also wrote the original novel, is smart and explicit if not gripping and the primary reason it keeps the audience tangled in its web is the awareness of the characteristics of the characters and the palpable tone offered to it. Jean-Marc Vallee; the director, is bang on his bucks on executing such a dark and fragile concept where he visits place with bold approach and unflinching argumentative revelations. The performance is utterly dependent on its protagonist Amy Adams that delivers the expected stellar performance and is supported decently by Patricia Clarkson and Chris Messina.

    Vanish

A slow pill that kicks in effectively and creates the anticipated impact with subtle and layered tone that is not only intriguing and mysterious to encounter but also is thought-provoking with exhilarating and nail-biting conversations.

I haven't read the book, but watching the first episode of the TV adaptation I felt like I was reading the first chapter of a book. It creates a dreamy mood that smoothly blends the present with the past, and gets you hooked quickly. Amy Adams is one of the finest actresses of her generation, and despite (or because of?) her deliberately grungy and un-made-up appearance here, one of the most naturally beautiful as well. *** out of 4.

Welcome to a world of worn out cliches. An alcoholic journalist. How original. This episode played out to me as just an hour long Absolut vodka commercial. Nothing more to see here.

The first episode of Sharp Objects does a decent job at introducing all of the central characters, while setting up the tone of the show. However, this all happens at a very slow pace, making the average viwer wonder how long this slow pace will continue. The shows cast is phenomenal, all of them top-notch, really. The cinematography is intriguing, a breath of fresh air, in the all but too mundane world of cinematography. The direction of the show seems to be in good hands, considering the director, Jean Marc Vallee's phenomenal work on Big Little Lies. The main problems with the show so far involve the fact that the show is so incredibly slow for huge chunks of time. Also none of the characters are particularly likeable, although that is sure to change. Sharp Objects certainly has promise as a show, and parts of the plot are certainly incredibly original, which is refreshing. Episode One: Vanish= 85% -10 points taken off for slow pace -5 points taken off for bad sound, and annoying characters

Very sloooow paced psycho crime drama. Have a patience. A lot! There is a gruesome murder in some small town in the country side. There is a lots of flashbacks. Be prepared to wait couple of episode (6) before some action. Nothing will happend before you get familiar with every character past and present. Then things become intresting. Acting is very good,

The pilot episode is too slow paced.Am not sure whether the flashbacks from Camille's (Amy Adams) life serve any purpose later in the series but as of now they just appear to be unnecessary and obnoxious. The pilot episode is too slow paced that I got bored halfway through and I saw the episode in 3-4 breaks because well... it was boring AF. Amy Adams performance is the only saving grace,am also interested in the dysfunctional relationship she shares with her mother. Other than that, there's nothing much to take away from the pilot. I'll be watching the second episode in the hope that it will pick up some pace.
