In a small town, situated in a picturesque Indian valley, lives a corrupt Deputy collector, Hare Murari, an equally corrupt Police Superintendent, Pasupathi; a doctor; a Judge; & Professor Rampyare. These officials always ensure that no one gets anything done without their permission, thus ensuring that their palms are adequately greased. When a young man named Prem Pratap seeks a license for conducting a song and dance sequence, he too is asked to bribe them, which he does. Subsequently, Hare Murari finds out that Prem Pratap may be a Government Official who has come incognito to investigate and expose them. Hare Murari's and the others worst fears are realized when they find out that Prem has been speaking long distance with none other than the President of India. What follows is hilarious chaos as the officials come together to try and portray themselves as honest and law-abiding citizens.

Chetan Anand directed his brother Dev Anand in earlier version of the same movie Afsar (1950).

This movie is based on the play by Nokolai Gogol.

This film was a remake of the Anand Brothers, Chetan's and Dev's Afsar (1950) this was Navketan's first production.

Absolute laugh riot this movie. Made well ahead of its time. It's a kind of situational comedy attempted in Andaz apna Anna. Well about the movie. There are group of corrupt officers who mistakely assume a orcehestran member to be of top CBI officer. To please him they try everything that's possible and what follows is hilarious turn of events. Main star of this movie is Late Om Prakash. Watch out for his reaction when he confesses of taking bribes to astrologer.

Chetan Anand was one of the best movie directors produced by India. This movie is remake of Afsar (1950) directed by Chetan Anand and same Dev Anand in the lead role. And they did it again after 27 years. The movie is based on Nikolai Gogol's play. Its about a small town in fringes run by a dubious trio. When they learn that a senior office is coming on a secret inspection they assume it to be Dev Anand who happens to be an actor with a traveling drama company. The daughters of the trio are used as lure, but he instead falls for orphan Priya Rajvansh (well I don't see any reason except in real life the director fell for her). If Dev Anand were real officer or not that is the question.

The movie is uncharacteristic of Chetan Anand - it is made as a loud comedy. This movie could have been a great musical (thanks to the drama troupe background) but is not! Still it is a time pass movie. With Dev Anand past his prime it perhaps was inevitable!
