Short summary

In "A View Through the Window", Major Ben Darnell is a brilliant physicist and a grieving father, whose estranged wife blames him for the tragic accidental death of their little son. He's called up to a top secret location, where the military is investigating a strange supernatural phenomenon. A portal to another place has somehow appeared in the middle of the desert and an invisible barrier is blocking it. The soldiers can see the people on the other side - a seemingly happy pilgrimesque family that's living in a picturesque farmhouse surrounded by a luscious green field, but the family can't see the portal or what's on the other side, so they're living their idyllic everyday life like normal. Darnell is stricken by them, since they represent everything he wishes for in his tragic life. He eventually realizes that the barrier disappears for a few seconds each day and decides to risk everything to cross over to the other side despite his commanding officer's direct order not to try ...

You may see my initial review of this episode under another name right here. I have since watched it several more times, and have found it to be probably the single best episode of this short-lived, low-budget fantasy series. Bill Pullman plays an Army major who along with several fellow Army members investigates what appears to be an impenetrable window into another time or dimension featuring a bucolic, Amish-type farm. To make it even eerier, the window is in the middle of a desert. Pullman, a first-rate actor, makes the weird plot work, as his major becomes increasingly obsessed with finding his way through the window. The quality of the episode is such that you may think you're watching a movie and not a cheap knockoff of TALES FROM THE CRYPT, OUTER LIMITS or even THE TWILIGHT ZONE. The ending is a real shocker with an epilogue that is guaranteed to give you the chills. Brilliantly written and performed and photographed. And may I add I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and chatting with Mr. Pullman in the Vegas airport years ago. He was on his way to Canada to appear in LOST HIGHWAY.

A bubble suddenly appears in the desert. Through the front of the bubble, one can see a bucolic landscape and a farm family from a past era. The Army is trying to figure a way to break through the bubble's skin, to no avail. Bill Pullman plays a scientist who is brought in to figure out just what is going on, but he becomes obsessed with finding his way into this seemingly idyllic landscape. The episode echoes the "Last Stop, Willoughby" episode from the old TWILIGHT ZONE, but is done up in a sci-fi wrapping. Pullman is great as always, and it becomes apparent that his obsession will lead to his destruction. This episode is about as far-out as this series got, but the unpleasant ending is typical of the show.
