Short summary

Villervalle and Lenalisa have to spend several hours every day reading schoolbooks, supervised by their grandmother. When Kaoko goes to his outrigger canoe for fishing, Villervalle cannot resist following him, and plays truant from school. Kaoko informs Villervalle that here they use hermit crabs as baits. Kaoko fills his hat with crabs, and then put the hat on his head. The following day is Sunday and no school work. The Botman family joins the natives and goes to Mass in the Catholic Church, built by coral stones in 1875. Monday morning the grandmother discovers that despite her watch-keeping, Villervalle has already slipped away. She asks a native woman to assist her in chasing the escaped schoolboy. Villervalle and Kaoko go in the outrigger canoe to the reef side of the island, where it's easy to harpoon fishes with spears. Out in the coral reef an octopus coils its arms around Villervalle's leg, who runs away in panic. Kaoko kills the octopus with a stone, and invites Villervalle...
