» » The New Avengers To Catch a Rat (1976–1977)

Short summary

D16 Agent Irwin Gunner was on the trail of a double agents known as White Rat in 1960 when an arranged trapeze accident caused him to suffer amnesia. 17 years later he begins to regain his memory and vows to track down the Rat, who has certainly moved up in the world by now. As Steed, Purdey and Gambit race to catch up with the long lost agent known only to them as 'Flyer', the White Rat ans his accomplices do the same in order to silence him.

The little girl who causes Gunner's memory to return is played by Ian Hendry's daughter Corrie.

Ian Hendry, who guest stars as Irwin Gunner (The Flyer) starred with Patrick Macnee in the first season of parent series The Avengers (1961), where he actually had top billing over Macnee in his rôle of Dr David Keel. The vast majority of this opening run is sadly missing from TV archives and thought to be probably lost forever - only the first 15 minutes of the very first episode, The Avengers: Hot Snow (1961), and three complete later episodes, The Avengers: Girl on the Trapeze (1961), (which is one of only two editions not to feature the character of Steed), The Avengers: The Frighteners (1961) and The Avengers: Tunnel of Fear (1961) are known to have been recovered and preserved.

A keen athlete in his younger years, Hendry had genuinely had experience of trapeze work.
