Short summary
The animals Blackarachnia encounters are clear homages to the main cast of Beast Wars: Transformers (1996). The rhino represents Rhinox, the gorilla Optimus Primal, the giant rat Rattrap, and the cheetah Cheetor.
The whole episode is basically a giant homage to Beast Wars: Transformers (1996). For one, it was written by Lawrence G. DiTillio and Bob Forward, who were also the writers of the aforementioned series. The title of the episode is a reference to the Predacons from that show.
This is the first time we get to see what Blackarachnia's head looks like under her helmet, and also the first time Waspinator has appeared after the final episode of Beast Machines: Transformers (1999).
The truck seen very briefly at the beginning in seen pulling a trailer that has stripes running along the sides of it, much like the trailer of the original Optimus Prime from Transformers (1984).
Waspinator has given nicknames to four members of the Transformers Animated cast so far:
- Bumblebee - "Bumble-bot"
- Sentinel Prime - "Sarge-bot"
- Swoop - "Bird-bot"
- Blackarachnia - "Spider-bot"
Several characters from Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) have been updated and included in the series. These include Blackarachnia, Waspinator and Rattrap (named as Rattletrap). As well as this, animals that resemble the alt forms of the core Maximals are seen at the end of Predacons Rising (itself referencing the opposing faction from the series), furthermore characters from the series' sequel, Beast Machines have also been seen. These include Strika and Derrick Wyatt (the lead character designer) even posted a design for Botanica on his blog.
On another note, much of the creative team from Beast Wars also worked on this series.
Waspinator, after being blown apart and pulling himself together mumbles "Waspinator cannot go offline. Waspinator have plans." This is a reference to the original Waspinator, who also got dismantled in almost every episode, yet survived each time. The line "Waspinator has plans" is also one of the more memorable lines his original version said in Beast Wars: Transformers (1996).
The way Snarl gets pinned to a mountain wall and rocks collapse on him can be seen as a nod to what happened to his original self in The Transformers: The Movie (1986).
While flying to Dinobot Island, Sentinel orders Jetfire and Jetstorm to go with "Maximum Burn". This was a phrase used throughout the Beast Wars cartoon, usually by Optimus Primal.
This episode marks the first time that the Dinobot Swoop has been named. Snarl is the only one whose name we haven't heard yet.
