Short summary

After hearing a cricket chirping, Howard and Sheldon make a wager, the winner to get one of the other's favorite comic books. Their wager is on whether the cricket is a common field cricket (Howard's assertion) or a snowy tree cricket (Sheldon's assertion). To determine who wins the bet, first they have to find the cricket, second they have to capture the cricket, and third they have to decide who can make the ultimate determination. The person they choose is entomology Professor "Creepy" Crawley, who is facing some issues of his own. Meanwhile, Leonard and Penny eventually admit to each other that their first time together as lovers was less than thrilling. They have to figure out how to overcome this problem, or if not what to do about it.

Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) is absent from the Comic Book Store. An unknown man is seen behind the counter.

Instead of laughter, this episode ends with the sound of applause and the studio audience cheering.

This episode was watched by 13.27 million people with a rating of 5.3 (adults 18-49).

The title is based on the mild oath "Jiminy Cricket!" that can be substituted for "Jesus Christ" and was the name of Pinocchio's friend and conscience in the Walt Disney version. Dorothy is heard using this expression in Võlur Oz (1939).

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) says to Raj (Kunal Nayyar), "His name isn't Toby. Toby is an absurd name for a cricket." When Professor Crawley, played by Lewis Black, likewise states that Toby is a stupid name for a cricket, Sheldon nudges Howard (Simon Helberg), and says, "Told you." This is cause Howard kept call the cricket Toby while they were looking up crickets in a book, even though Raj called the cricket Toby first,

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) claims that "we haven't established that I'm wrong once", most likely referring to the Wolverine bone claws argument at the comic book store. On other occasions Sheldon has been proven wrong, like in episode 3.22, Suure Paugu teooria: The Staircase Implementation (2010), which is a flashback episode:

  • Firefly (2002) would run "for years"; it only ran for one season before it was canceled.
  • Microsoft Zune would be more popular than the Apple iPod; sales for the former dwindled while the latter would become a Global Icon.

Title Reference: Deduced from the argument over the cricket's name, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) argued to name the cricket "Jiminy", while Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) kept calling it "Toby".

This episode aired in Canada on September 28, 2009.

Professor Crawley (Lewis Black) mentions "having to move in with his daughter in Oxnard", a town in California where the actress that plays Penny, Kaley Cuoco's father is a Realtor.

TITLE REFERENCE: Title refers to debate (conjecturing) on what type of cricket, which Sheldon (Jim Parsons) believes should be named "Jiminy", the guys have in their apartment. It has nothing to do with the mild oath "Jiminy Cricket", which some people substitute for "Jesus Crist."

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is actually wrong; the scientist whose work he bases his cricket identification on is actually Amos Dolbear, NOT Emile Dolbear. He came up with a formula (Dolbear's Law) to state a relationship between air temperature and the number of cricket chirps per minute. Dolbear never actually stated a specific species of cricket; subsequent researchers simply assumed it was a snowy tree cricket.

This episode is rated TV-PG-DL.

Raj (Kunal Nayyar) reveals that Indian Food disagrees with him.

Howard (Simon Helberg) reveals that he used to collect Insects. Based on his description of what he would do, it was proper entomology. He doesn't reveal the age range that he did it during childhood.
