Short summary

While Trance has taken an unannounced vacation, Dylan and the rest of the crew investigate the remains of a derelict High Guard starship, the Pax Magellanic. There they find the last of the crew over 300 years old, but seemingly unaffected by age. They claim that it is due to radiation from the destroyed planet nearby and since their slipstream drive was irreparably damaged, they have remained in the asteroid ruins of the planet.

Laura Bertram does not appear in this episode.

This episode sees the crew of Andromeda, minus Trance who is AWOL, find the Pax Magellanic, a sister ship to Rommie. When they board they are surprised to discover the ship is still manned by people claiming to be the original crew. Lt Jill Pearce explains that she has been in command for the three hundred years since they were stranded after their slipstream drive was damaged during a battle in which the planet they were orbiting was destroyed by Nietzscheans. Tyr is adamant that his people didn't do it though and the evidence suggests he is right; meanwhile Rev Bem can't find any reason for the crew of the Pax Magellanic not aging for three centuries. Rommie tries to interface with her sister's AI but finds it damaged. Dylan enjoys the military discipline aboard the Pax and certainly enjoys the company of Lt Pearce but soon it becomes apparent that not everything she claimed was true and as Andromeda and her crew come close to discovering the truth they find themselves in real danger.

As this episode got underway I was prepared to be disappointed; first Trance is away again, I can't think of another show that has main cast members missing for so many early episodes; then we get another story involving people from Dylan's time... at least there was no time travel. Then the story started developing in ways I hadn't expected; there were several interesting twists; some of which were a genuine surprise. There was a good amount of action; the best being a battle accompanied by Wagner's 'The Flying Dutchman'... not surprisingly we learn Tyr likes fighting to Wagner! The regular cast all perform well and there is a solid guest performance from Monika Schnarre as Lt Pierce. Overall this episode turned out to be much better than I expected thanks to unexpected twists and some good action.
