Short summary
Moments from the uncompromisingly bleak existence of a secretary, her intellectually disabled sister, aloof and uneasy teacher boyfriend, bizarre neighbor and irritating workmate.
Directorial debut of Mike Leigh.
The film was bankrolled by Memorial Films, co-owned by Albert Finney and Michael Medwin, who had recently enjoyed great success with Lindsay Anderson's If.... (1968) and were about to commence production on Gumshoe (1971).
A big fan of the film was progressive TV producer Tony Garnett who produced Mike Leigh's next effort, Play for Today: Hard Labour (1973).
Mike Leigh wasn't terribly enamored with the rigors of feature film making and would concentrate his efforts on stage and TV for some years to follow. His next feature film would be _High Hopes_ some 17 years later.
