Short summary

Sam finds himself leaping in and out of Lee Harvey Oswald, accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Beginning with Oswald's time in the Marine Corp in Japan in 1957, Sam leaps at random heading closer to the day of the assassination in 1963. Al assumes Sam is there to stop the assassination by uncovering a conspiracy involving Oswald. As Sam continues to leap further along Oswald's life his mind becomes tangled with Oswald's until he loses all control of his actions. Before Sam is lost completely Al discovers there is no conspiracy and must stop Sam/Oswald from killing JFK. In the end Sam and Oswald are separated and Sam's mission is completed. Al reports a change from the original history as Sam leaps out.

Donald P. Bellisario, series creator and writer of this episode, actually served in the Marine Corps with Lee Harvey Oswald. The scene where Sergeant Bellisario confronts Oswald about his possession of communist literature is based on his own recollections of his first encounter with Oswald.

Willie Garson also played Lee Harvey Oswald in Руби (1992).

This is the first episode in which Sam leaps into a real person. He would later leap into Clint Hill in Квантовый Скачок: Lee Harvey Oswald - October 5, 1957 - November 22, 1963: Part 2 (1992), Dr. Ruth Westheimer in Квантовый Скачок: Dr. Ruth - April 25, 1985 (1993) and Elvis Presley in Квантовый Скачок: Memphis Melody - July 3, 1954 (1993).

1957 was the first year that Sam leaped into seven times. He previously did so in Квантовый Скачок: So Help Me God - July 29, 1957 (1989), Квантовый Скачок: Good Night, Dear Heart - November 9, 1957 (1990), Квантовый Скачок: Future Boy - October 6, 1957 (1991), Квантовый Скачок: The Last Gunfighter - November 28, 1957 (1992), Квантовый Скачок: The Curse of Ptah-Hotep - March 2, 1957 (1992) and Квантовый Скачок: A Leap for Lisa - June 25, 1957 (1992).

The time period of this episode partially overlaps with Квантовый Скачок: Future Boy - October 6, 1957 (1991). As with the Japan segment of this episode, that episode took place from October 6 to October 7, 1957.

While Dr. Beckett (Scott Bakula) is under the Lee Harvey Oswald persona and firing his rifle downrange, the Marine cadre that is coaching him is "BELLISARIO". Donald P. Bellisario, producer and co-creator of "Quantum Leap".

In the original history, Sgt. Lopez was murdered by Lee Harvey Oswald on October 7, 1957.

This episode takes place in Dallas, Texas on March 21, 1963, in Atsugi, Kanagawa, Japan from October 5 to October 6, 1957, in Stallion's Gate, New Mexico on February 14, 1999, in Negashaia-Yamato, Japan on October 7, 1957 and in Tustin, California on January 6, 1959.

On November 22, 1963, Sam's father John Beckett was teaching him to drive a tractor when they heard that John F. Kennedy had been assassinated.

This episode was essentially the producer's rebuttal to Oliver Stone's "JFK".

Where Stone pushed the idea that there was a conspiracy to kill JFK, Bellisario makes the argument that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

This is done by having Sam leap into Oswald's body in historical moments in Oswald's life. Unlike the usual premise of the show, where Sam is in control of the person he's lept into, here Oswald is still in control, and Sam is only along for the ride.

These historical moments, based on fact, including an encounter that Bellisario himself had with Oswald while both were in the Army, are depicted to show that Oswald's assassination of JFK was motivated by his long held political beliefs.

This is the only Quantum Leap episode I absolutely hated. Keep in mind that I'm from Massachusetts, and someone who not only followed the history of the Kennedy family but a part of it. On four different occasions, I met Ted Kennedy, even worked on his presidential campaign and etc members of his family. In addition to that, I have been educating myself for years about the Kennedy assassination, and I know that Mr. Bellasario wrote this in answer to the movie JFK which has more facts than this one does.

The whole cartoonish picture of Lee Harvey Oswald is ridiculous and it is even likely that Oswald wasn't even in the Texas School Book Depository when the shots were fired.

But this is not about a history lesson or even rehashing that horrible day. This is just substandard writing and acting and direction for this series. It's best to pretend it never happened.

I felt that it was a waste of my time as it further backs up the Warren Commission's grim fairy tale of a lone assassin.

And the fact that Oswald was killed before the full truth could be told.says volumes here.
