A group of firebugs are drawn into some form of ritual, however it may be something different and more sinister, with another force pulling the strings.
A very mixed bag this film and I will start with the good, because in this regard it is very good. The animation. I am not sure if it is real landscapes filmed then with CGI added afterwards or if the whole thing is animated but however it was done the film is visually very convincing. It is detailed and natural, with the bugs looking and moving so naturally that it will make you itch a little. Likewise the landscapes they move upon look so very real that you believe when the camera changes its focal point, that this is what really is happening – it is all just real. So on this front the film is great; it is what it chooses to do with this that doesn't work.
What we get is a very clumsy message about the effects of Christianity; clumsy in the sense that it is broad and simplistic, but also clumsy in the way that it doesn't appear to have much thought behind how it is presented here. I saw this as someone with no real dog in this fight, but even to me it seemed like the sort of metaphor a teenager would use – and it certainly clashes with the high degree of sophistication and intelligence in the design and delivery of the animation.
It is worth a look for how well animated it is, but ultimately the substance is broad and crude in its construct, being unlikely to do much for anyone apart from those who already have this broad opinion as their own.
