When Randall is singing "He's got the whole world in his hands" on the world broadcast, he starts faking singing in foreign languages. Ironically, he actually says in French: "Je suis le papillon sur la table", which translates to "I am the butterfly on the table".

At one point in the film, the commander tells Randall, "Have fun." Randall replies with "Fun is my Chinese neighbors middle name." Disney was afraid that the joke would offend Chinese viewers. However, many Chinese fans actually found the joke to be very funny.

The filmmakers spent nine weeks at the Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas, shooting at the famous Rocket Park (the gargantuan Building 9 that houses all of the spacecraft mock-ups for the ongoing shuttle missions) and Building 32, which houses the world's largest thermal vacuum chamber and simulates all conditions of outer space (except zero gravity).

For the surface of Mars, the filmmakers shot in Moab, Utah, where they found giant cliffs, red rocks, a lack of vegetation, and the overall scale of what could be a distant planet.

To prepare for their roles as astronauts, the three stars attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, riding in simulators and participating in other activities.

The working title for this film was "Space Cadet".

The building and lobby shown as NASA Headquarters was actually the Sugar Land, TX, offices of Fluor, a major engineering and construction company.

Ulysses (the chimpanzee in the movie) was played by Raven, a three-year-old female chimpanzee.

The motel interiors and some exteriors were built in the warehouse. The brick facades, were painted onto the exterior to look like bricks with shadows fixed into the artwork. The cheap-looking interior 'textured' walls actually had no texture. The surfaces were entirely flat. In fact, the art department painted shadows of texture on the walls as if lighting was always from the same directional sources. In fact, all the walls and ceiling were movable so lighting and cameras could be directed from any point deemed appropriate. If the walls had indeed been textured, the actual shadows that would have been cast would constantly change apparent direction, which would have been noticeable and distracting.

The president is always shown in tight shots. They built an impressive Oval Office set that you basically never see.

The production offices for this film were in Houston in an office-warehouse facility near on Seamist and W. 18th Street, in northwest Houston, TX, just inside the I-610 Loop.

To get the PG rating in the UK, 42 seconds were cut to remove a scene. In this scene, Young Fred Z. Randall (Brandon Kaplan), enthralled by all things astronaut and space, climbs into his home washing machine and goes for a 'spin' inside it, all the while pretending that he's in a space capsule or astronaut trainer, preparing himself for the rigors of space such as motion sickness, so that he may one day be better prepared to apply for his dream job... to be a true NASA astronaut! (PS: Don't try this 'training' method at home.)

The film was titled after the song "RocketMan" by Elton John which was also featured in the film.

The drapes used in the Oval Office are the same ones used for the movie "Dave (1993)"
