Short summary
Chris Rock was considered for the part of Willie.
Joseph B. Vasquez wrote the script in three days. He originally wrote the part of Vinny for himself to play.
During production, director Joseph B. Vasquez was attacked on the way to the set. His face was slashed by a homeless man. According to an interview with Nestor Serrano, when Vasquez returned to work after recuperating he was angry and "intolerable", often fighting with the cast and crew.
John Leguizamo wanted the part of Vinny but was offered the role of Johnny instead. Director Joseph B. Vasquez had promised the role of Johnny to his best friend but the studio preferred Leguizamo.
John Leguizamo originally wanted to play Johnny as being street-smart and wearing the latest urban fashion. But Vasquez insisted that Johnny be an innocent character. Leguizamo originally could not believe that a young man from the ghetto could be so innocent until Vasquez revealed that that part of Johnny was based on himself.
Willie was partially based on writer-director Joseph B. Vasquez. Vasquez was of Afro-Puerto Rican descent. According to Vasquez, whenever he was turned down for a job he would say "It's 'cause I'm black, right?"
The film was shot in dangerous areas of the South Bronx. Neighborhood residents were hired to look out for potentially dangerous people approaching the filming. Some scenes were disrupted by people throwing things and yelling at the actors.
A sequel titled "Hangin' With the Homegirls" was planned but never came to fruition.
Vasquez was also an aspiring actor and based that part of Tom on himself.
Vasquez based Fernando aka Vinny on himself. According to Vasquez, he went through a phase of wearing his hair slick back. His friends accused him of trying to look Italian and nicknamed him "Vinny". He also said that Vinny's womanizing was based on himself. Vinny originally had many more lines in the film because Vasquez originally wrote the part for himself. But he trimmed the part in editing so the character would not overshadowed the rest of the cast.
Paula Garcés' film debut.
