Short summary
The episode name "Belly Speaker" is a literal translation of the word "ventriloquist", which comes from the Latin words "ventrum" (stomach) and "loquor" (I speak).
The ventriloquist's dummy is called Mycroft, the same name that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who appears in this episode) gave to Sherlock Holmes' elder brother.
Conan-Doyle's wife did die from tuberculosis in 1906.
Conan-Doyle was quite an athlete, playing goalkeeper on an English football club under a pseudonym, A. C. Smith, and playing cricket from 1899 to 1907, when he took up golf. His favorite sport was bareknuckle boxing and one of his books "Rodney Stone" had a boxing setting. His love of pugilism was well known enough that he was approached to referee the Jack Johnson-Jim Jeffries championship match in 1910, but the author declined.
Murdoch refers to a recent case that has been solved a a 'cold case,' exactly the opposite from the definition that is currently popular.
This episode takes place in 1895.
