Auspicious Sight was filmed in Varanasi, India. It is an audio/visual narrative drawing its title from the Sanskrit word Darshan, a term for auspicious vision or sight occurring during intense eye contact with a temple deity during a ritual Aarti ceremony where there is a sustained cacophonous rhythmic sound from bells, drums and metal instruments. My video Auspicious Sight was inspired by an Aarti that I came upon unexpectedly. As I listened I became aware of bits of ephemera and trash, the humbleness of which seemed in contrast to the enormity of sound. I filmed over the course of the next several days describing the passage of day to night. The subtle movement of these ordinary witnessing objects in rhythm to the music and sound becomes uncannily mysterious and beautiful, contradicting a typical response to the ever-present accumulation of garbage in the city.
