Short summary

The Eternal Champion gathers nine key individuals from different time periods who have died trying to change the future for the greater good. He arranges a contest for these nine individuals and will reward the winner with the gift of life.

During the one-player matches where the opponent is computer-controlled, the computer cheats. The most obvious form of cheating is when your opponent performs Special Moves when it has no Inner Strength.

Each of the nine stages are based on the environments of one of the characters, and each one has a special "overkill" move that can be performed - when performing the killing move, if it is done in a particular way (different in every stage) the overkill feature will occur, and your opponent will be killed far more excessively than usual.

Overkill Move: Blade's stage - Stand in front of row of windows closest to fan (on either side of the screen) with opponent standing somewhat in front of fan. Your opponent will get knocked into the fan, where they will be chopped into pieces and continue to spin around. One of the character's items will get thrown out, such as Slash's club or Larcen's hat.

Overkill Move: Jetta's stage - Line your opponent in front of either of the two centre pillars; if it is the left centre pillar you must stand to your opponent's left, if it is the right centre pillar you must stand to their right. A large hole will open beneath your opponent and they fall to a fiery death in the lava below. The pillars are left cracked.

Overkill Move: Larcen's stage - Line your opponent up under either the "CH" in CHICAGO and stand on their left, or under the "ER" in THEATER and stand on their right. A car full of gangsters proceed to drive by and gun your opponent down, then make another pass to unload the rest of their rounds. After the excitement stops, the theatre's ticket lady decides that finishing her nails is more important than calling the police.

Overkill Move: Midnight's stage - Have your opponent standing in the second doorway from the left, and stand to their left. As soon as your opponent hits the ground, a military helicopter flies in and unleashes heat-seeking missiles upon them.

Overkill Move: RAX's stage - Get your opponent directly in the center of the big spotlight on the left and stand at either side. After you deal the final blow, a little flying robot comes and freezes your opponent, then another follows to disintegrate them into a pile of dust which is swept and vacuumed up by a third robot.

Overkill Move: Shadow's stage - Stand in front of the right half of the center neon kanji with your opponent in front of left half. Your final blow sends them into the sign, electrocuting them. An eyeball rolls away from the smoking remains of the body.

Overkill Move: Slash's stage - Scroll the screen all the way to the left of the stage and stand just to the right of the big volcano's peak, with your opponent on the left. Your opponent will be dragged off-screen, accompanied by some chomping noises. Then a big dinosaur will poke its head into sight, with oyur opponent's legs protruding from its mouth. It proceeds to chew some more and swallows your opponent and lets out a roar, during which one of the opponent's items (the same items as in Blade's overkill) will be spat out.

Overkill Move: Trident's stage - Stand to the right of the stream of water coming from the mermaid statue, with your opponent on the left. Some tentacles come up from the water below, latching ontp ypur opponent and pulling them under. After a brief, useless struggle the water is once again calm, though a little red.

Overkill Move: Xavier's stage - Stand in either of the right or left doorways closest to the executioners, with your opponent between you and the fire. Your opponent gets knocked into the fire, where they writhe in agony burning in magical green flames. After the flames consume them, their head will poke out one last time to let you see their eyes burn out of their sockets. By the time the flames die down, all that remains is a skeleton in a peculiar pose. The skull falls to the ground soon afterwards.
