Short summary

Examining the bloody murder of a Miami father and his wife, which the teenage daughter survived, Horatio's team soon finds trails to a car rented by a man who flew in from New York City. There Horatio teams up with his CSI counterpart Mac Taylor, who is examining a cop-killing, possibly by the same murderer. Together they follow him, work out what erroneously drove him to Miami and arrive at an analogous crime scene, where rich Michael Hanover and his wife were killed, badly stabbed adolescent son Mike Jr. The matter of key access suggests some involvement of the janitor.

The music playing in the background, right after the opening credits, while Speed is photographing evidence is also the theme music for House MD.

This is the backdoor pilot of spin-off CSI: New York (2004).

We get a mix of CSI Miami and the new CSI New York in this episode which introduces us to the second spin off of the popular CSI (Las Vegas) television show, making it three all together. Thus, we see many of the cast members from both shows here.

On the Miami side, we mainly see David Caruso, with a little bit of Emily Proctor and a very small clip of Rory Cochrane ("Tim Speedle," for those fans who remember him). On the New York show, which is, as stated, being introduced here, we see everyone but Eddie Cahill although most of this episode revolves around the work of team leader Gary Sinise ("Mac Taylor"). In other words, the two bosses dominate this particular transitional show, I guess symbolizing a torch being passed from Miami's leader to New York's CSI boss..

Not having seen this episode since it came out the first year (2004), it was good to see Vanessa Ferlito ("Aiden Burn"). I was always sorry she only lasted 26 episodes. She got homesick for New York and chose to leave the show, which is 95 percent shot in Los Angeles.

Anyway, the story was fair, interesting in spots and confusing in others. It begins with a double murder in Miami, a grisly one in which one of the victims is nearly decapitated, and then is traced to New York, where a similar murder takes place. To everyone's surprise - especially Caruso, who tracked this possible killer to New York - one the victims in New York murders was the suspect! There are more of the usual twists and turns, too. The main thing was to introduce us to Sinise and most of his crew, and show the contrast between the sunny-and-colorful Miami and the gray-and-imposing New York skyline.
