Karl Valentin sees in the personal ads that a wealthy woman is looking for a husband. When he applies for the well-paying position, however, she's not what he expected; neither is the reception.

It's a fairly simple comedy and typical for 1913, just before the mass destruction of slapstick swept other forms of movie comedy from the screen for a few years. Valentin is a comic of regret and reaction, and if things finally get out of hand, it's miscalculation rather than malice from the tall, skinny Valentin with the putty nose and sad mien of a clown.

Mind you, I prefer slapstick, but that's personal preference. Take a thoughtful look and see what you can see in this.

This is a very early slapstick movie by Karl Valentin, produced in his own studio in Munich - although he was much less popular than Charles Chaplin, here's another parallel between the two.

For today's viewers, the version included in the Valentin Spielfilme 3-DVD box has an explaining voice-over in German. Most of the humor comes from the contrast of Valentin's meager figure and the rather voluminous bride, who come together via a newspaper ad.

Friends of really old movies may well find delight in this short film. And at an age of almost 100 years, you can't expect all fresh jokes...

    7/10.
