» » The Andy Griffith Show A Medal for Opie (1960–1968)

Short summary

Opie decides that he's going to enter the 50 yard dash at the Sheriff's Day boys' races and convinces himself that he's going to win. For Opie, nothing would be greater that winning that medal. He dreams about winning and even prays for a win. Barney doesn't help things by telling him about the time he won a medal in a footrace as a boy and offers to train him for the race, guaranteeing him a win. When Opie comes in last, he is despondent and goes home in a grump. Andy tries to explain to him the meaning of being a good loser but Opie won't hear of it; that medal was his and the winner took it away from him. Once again, Barney suggests a solution.

Ron Howard is such a good actor that he can even play a convincing jerk here, at least until he comes to his senses at the end. You wonder what's going through that young brain as he slouches on the sofa, fiddling with a thread on his shirt, trying desperately to hang on to his bitter disappointment and not to yield to Andy's lesson about sportsmanship and maturity and doing it all as a seasoned pro. Barney has the funniest line about eating in a Chinese restaurant and also a great double-take in the epilogue when he's trying to talk Juanita into a cost-free evening over at her place and suddenly realizes the potential locked away in Opie's toy bank. Again, Ron Howard shows that he gets what the scene is about and plays the perfect straight man to Barney. In the stands at the track meet, we don't see many familiar faces besides Bee. Speaking of faces, post-war kids in 1962 look nothing like today's beneficiaries of bountiful living in the U.S., and in fact a couple of them already look, in the face at least, more like middle-aged, street-tough, males than grammar schoolers. As Barney says about the Mendelbright sister's feet falling asleep, I wonder what causes that?
