Short summary

The death-by-drowning of a minor-league diplomat may be the precursor to the assassination in public of a much higher-ranking official.

The title is based on the phrase "It's an ill wind that blows no one good" which dates back to the 16th century in various similar forms.

PLEASE NOTE: The summary listed on IMDb is quite wrong. The show is about a clever murder of a deposed president--not some minor diplomat. It seems that the guy was ousted from power by some military junta--and they killed him to try to prevent the public airing of his dossier on the systematic torture being done by the Generalissimo and his associates.

"East Wind--Ill Wind" begins with this fated ex-leader walking along the beach. A woman stages a boating accident nearby and calls for help. The ex-leader jumps into the water and is dragged to his drowning death by a scuba diver hiding under the surface. Why so elaborate? They want it to look like an accident. At the same time, they broke into the man's safe deposit box and stole his dossier. But there are two problems. First, there was a witness to the killing. Second, the papers they stole were phonies. So, it's up to McGarrett and his men to try to catch the perpetrators AND stop them from tying up these 'loose ends'.

While "Hawaii Five-O" hadn't done any similar episodes for a few seasons, the show did do too many shows about dictators or political exiles living in Hawaii. It was just too silly assuming EVERY such person somehow made it to these islands! In addition, there is a dumb plot hole in the show--the diver just left his equipment hidden and the police found it a day or so later. This makes no sense. Scuba equipment is expensive and leaving it lying about would alert the police that the death MIGHT be murder. But, otherwise it's an engaging episode. Not great but worth seeing.
