» » Roadies The All Night Bus Ride (2016)

Short summary

When an Oregon gig is cancelled the band takes to the road to the next stop in southern California, stopping briefly in the wee hours in the tiny stop of Weed, California, Shelli gets off the bus to fly to join her husband for her father in law's funeral. Father figure to the SHB crew, Phil answers why he got started, telling about his early days meeting Ronnie Van Zant when Lynyrd Skynyrd was just starting, explaining how Van Zant was a father to the others in that band. Themes of maturing, family, and personal sacrifice and devotion, with that sort of late night journey through Rod Serling's home turf as a gloss. Reg has an epiphany that may affect his relationship with Kelli Ann and the whole crew and band. The music is all Skynyrd. The song of the day puts a bow on it. Is talk of Skynyrd a foreshadowing?

The specific concert Phil talks about is when Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for the Rolling Stones on August 21, 1976 at the Knebworth Fair 1976.

I loved Almost Famous and have been really disappointed with most episodes Roadies. In particular, "The City Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken" was both inane and an insult to those who died.

However, this episode, is everything I hoped Roadies would be. A nice bit of a history lesson about a classic band combined with a few touches of humour.

I will admit that when I first stumbled onto this show on July 4th that I thought Ron White was a terrible actor, but as the season went on and he came back to the show I grew to appreciate his acting. This episode left me with chills and Roadies is the only show on television in the last 10 years that I greatly looked forward to watching every week. The bus scenes with Phil telling his story about Skynnard actually had me in tears and when they sang Simple Man it was a perfect way to bring that curtain down.

If this show is not renewed a great piece of art is going to die. Personally I can't wait for season 2 because this show finished so strongly. Luke Wilson and the rest of the crew captivated me and for some reason Reg was a character that I grew to like and felt a connection as a business guy.

    Please bring this show back.
