Short summary

Phil and Colin Beverly are two inept small town brothers with big dreams, and a song-and-dance rock group to take them there. When they learn of a 'performance competition' in Austin, Texas called South by Southwest, they set out on a cross-country journey, followed by a camera crew of student filmmakers who document their quest to the top! The top of what, they have no idea.

Co-Creators Jake Dilley and McManus Woodend met at The David Lynch Graduate School of Cinematic Arts in Fairfield, Iowa. Director of Photography Garrett Schwindt was also part of its inaugural Class of 2014.

It took Editor/Producer Matthew Hartman and Co-Creators Dilley & Woodend over four months to review and edit over 130 hours of footage down to a standard running time.

The first assembly cut of Rocksteppy had a running time of over three hours. Many of Dilley & Woodend's family and friends were subjected to this cut. This cut also included many songs from Phil Collins.

Initially, Dilley & Woodend developed a project called We'll Know When We Get There, a 90-page dramedy they tried to fund unsuccessfully for six months. The only remaining similarities are the main character's names (Phil & Colin) and the travel route.

David Lynch and Peter Farrelly agreed to make cameos after seeing preliminary footage of Rocksteppy.

The dialogue in Rocksteppy is entirely improvised. Most of the people interviewed had never seen or heard of Rocksteppy before the interview.

Phil and Colin's apartment in the movie was owned by their mom, Bonnie. In real life, Co-Creators Dilley & Woodend lived in that same apartment. Their landlord was Bonnie White, who played Bonnie. Most of the eight-person crew stayed in the apartment during the shoot.

The band featured at Tap Nelson's studio was assembled by Jeff "The Dude" Dowd and had never played together before. Members include John Altman, Margie Balter, and Steve Martini.

In a deleted scene, Co-Creators Dilley & Woodend receive a full-body spray tan. Woodend, who's appeared in over 25 commercials as The GEICO Caveman, said that it was worse than the 3-4 hours of makeup he routinely undergoes as The Caveman.

There was no budget for wardrobe, so all clothes worn on-screen either came from the actors or were procured from Fairfield, Iowa thrift stores. The character of Phil (Jake Dilley) wears maternity jeans throughout the movie.
