Pistulya belongs to a backward caste where there is no place for education.His late father wanted him to get educated and put him in school now he cant afford the school uniform and books hence he cant go to school.His mother forces him to beg along with her and is not concerned about educating him.Pistulya's community are engaged into stealing business to make a living and also want him to do the same.He is beaten and forcefully trained into stealing.But feels guilty as he cant attend school.

Film won National Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director at 58 National Awards in 2010.

Nagraj Manjule said that the film depicts his own struggle for education and experiences of the people around him.

The film was shot in Ahmednagar over a period of two days, on a shoestring budget of Rs 1.5 Lakh which was contributed by Manjule's friends, family and colleagues.

Suraj Pawar was offered the role when director Nagraj Manjule visited his school in Karmala.
