Short summary
The aircraft bearing The Aviators' logo in several scenes throughout season one is a 1972 Cessna U206F owned at the time by Executive Producer Anthony Nalli. Just after the premiere in 2010 the aircraft was sold and Nalli acquired another aircraft, a 1978 Cessna P210N which will be seen in subsequent seasons of the show.
The first public screenings of the show took place on July 30th and 31st at EAA AirVenture's Theatre in the Woods before a combined crowd of 5,000. Within the next 36 hours, the show's website received over 1 million hits.
In the first six months after its premiere the show aired almost 8,000 times across North America - an average of over 40 times a day.
All of the hosts of The Aviators (2010) are actually pilots. Anthony Nalli is an instrument rated private pilot. Sara Rependa is commercial, multi-engine pilot. Kurtis Arnold is an instrument rated commercial pilot as well as an air traffic controller. Jeff Lewis is an airline captain and aerobatic pilot. Raeleen Ranger is an airline pilot. And the newest member of the cast, George Canyon is an ultralight pilot.
In preparation for the shoot of the grass airstrip at Triple Tree Aerodrome in Woodruff, SC, the producers were concerned that without any aircraft it would just look like a plain field, and asked if it would be possible to have some aircraft on hand to fly. Organizers put out a call on their Facebook page and on the day of the shoot over 100 aircraft showed up including a C47 and an F4U Corsair, both of which were profiled in the segment.
Nielsen ratings after season one was broadcast report an average weekly household viewership in the US of 3,590,899. Assuming 2.6 viewers per viewing household that would be 9,336,337 weekly US viewers.
The movie poster/DVD cover for season 3 showed what had become the trademark "orange sky" backdrop with 3 fighter jets, each jet representing a season of the show. In season 4, while the aircraft in the orange sky was the silhouette of a single airliner, four illuminated landing lights on the aircraft subtly represented each of the seasons.
Both the opening and closing theme songs were written specifically for the show and are performed by Anthony and Adam Mancini and Remigio Pereira (of The Tenors). The title of the closing theme song is "I want to fly."
Executive producer Anthony Nalli first met creator John Lovelace when Nalli invited Lovelace to the Brampton airport in the summer of 2007 to film an episode of Lovelace's show at the time Wings Over Canada: Young Eagles (2007). After the filming Nalli expressed an interest in working with Lovelace again on other projects. The two stayed in touch until Lovelace created The Aviators in 2008 which Nalli acquired soon afterward.
Kurtis Arnold was invited to audition for The Aviators (2010) in the spring of 2009 by Executive producer Anthony Nalli a few years after the two met at an aviation seminar where Arnold was one of the speakers.
On March 31st, 2011 while filming for season two at an air show in Lakeland, FL the crew consisting of Anthony Nalli, Lisa Nalli, Kurtis Arnold, Devin Lund, and Dave Qualley were minutes away from being caught in a storm with nearby tornadoes. The crew was on the field filming as the weather very quickly deteriorated. They returned to the media center in the nick of time as the storm became extremely violent within minutes. Footage was captured for the episode.
Prior to the release of season 2, producers announced Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH) as the new official home airport of The Aviators. Wittman is also home to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and their major annual event, AirVenture, during which Wittman's control tower becomes the busiest in the world.
During the "Condor Squadron" season 2 shoot in Van Nuys, CA in November of 2010, while climbing down from aboard the T-6 Texan she had just flown in, producer Lisa Nalli (aka. Lisa Charney) fell off the wing of the aircraft landing harshly. Not seriously injured, she immediately looked up at the camera and asked "Did you get that?"
Awarded a 2012 Silver Plaque in the category of Educational/Documentary Series at the 48th Hugo Television Awards presented by Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago International Film Festival.
Producers had planned to film a segment on the Aerostars Aerobatic Team in Lakeland, FL during Sun N Fun 2012 but lead Harvey Meek was unable to fly due to a sudden illness. The team then organized an impromptu air show for May 12, 2012 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI exclusively for The Aviators. It became a major shoot for a feature in season 3.
In the late stages of filming for season 3, Anthony Nalli, Lisa Nalli and Devin Lund spent most of a three week period at an airport in Henderson, NV with Mötley Crüe front man Vince Neil as he began to take flight lessons. The training was arranged for the purpose of filming some exclusive segments for "The Aviators" while allowing Neil the ability to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a pilot.
On September 18th, 2012 the first episode of the third season skyrocketed up the iTunes charts eventually landing on the #3 position on the day of it's release, immediately behind The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and ahead of titles like Top Gear, The Colbert Report, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, and Mythbusters. This meteoric rise carried with it seasons one and two which finished the day in positions #7 and #9 respectively, resulting in all three seasons of The Aviators ranked in the top 10 at the same time.
During new season 4 host Joe Ellis first filming with the show he first went on a flight in a UH-1 Huey helicopter, something he described as "the coolest thing he's ever done." He later went for his first flight in a float plane (which also happened to be open cockpit). That then became the coolest things he'd ever done. Until later still he went flying in tight formation with Team Aerodynamix. That, of course, then became "the coolest thing he's ever done!"
The Aviators (2010) was featured in the September 2013 issue of AOPA Pilot Magazine, the largest aviation publication in the world with a readership of over 400,000.
Joe Ellis auditioned for the show in July of 2012 quite off the cuff. Anthony Nalli was between shoots at AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI and had only a few minutes so instructed Joe to give a demonstration of wing deicing using some loading skids that happened to be there (oddly, despite aircraft being almost everywhere else given they were at one of the largest air shows in the world). Joe was remarkably convincing and Anthony immediately cast him for season 4. The audition reel can be found on the show's YouTube channel.
