As Bob Canby struggled onward over the alkali desert with parched throat and stiffening limbs, he almost wished he had not left his partner, Jack Willoby, hors de combat, after a stunning blow on the head, and skipped oat with their combined gold. But he had no map of the mines, which turned out to be one of the wealthiest in the country; to retrace his steps would be useless. Six months passed and Mrs. Willoby, receiving no word from her husband, took their little daughter, Nona, and started in search of him.
