As Bob Canby struggled onward over the alkali desert with parched throat and stiffening limbs, he almost wished he had not left his partner, Jack Willoby, hors de combat, after a stunning blow on the head, and skipped oat with their combined gold. But he had no map of the mines, which turned out to be one of the wealthiest in the country; to retrace his steps would be useless. Six months passed and Mrs. Willoby, receiving no word from her husband, took their little daughter, Nona, and started in search of him. The trip, however, proved too much for their strength, and ere the prairie schooner had finished its journey she died. The child she placed in charge of Sheriff Johnson, and his good wife, having no children of their own, gladly welcomed the motherless little one. Willoby, unlike his young partner, had made a map of the mine, but when he revived his reason had flown, so for ten years he wandered aimlessly around, always closely guarding the sketch of his claim.
