Short summary
After Cotton's father shows up it rocks the town of Salem. Mary's power over George ends up being compromised.
Increase Mather's character is somewhat historically inaccurate. While he did believe in witches and did not approve of many of Cotton's beliefs/behavior, he was not zealotly a believer in the trials. He actually disagreed with Cotton on the use of spectral evidence and asked for cooler minds to prevail. He said: "Better that 10 witches escape than one innocent person be condemned."
