Short summary
Natural blue roses do not exist because roses lack a gene that will create a true blue colour in them. In history, blue roses were just white ones which were dyed blue. In 2004 a Japanese company named Suntory teamed up with an Australian company named Florigene in order to use genetic engineering to add blue pigment to white roses. Unfortunately the resulting roses look more like a deep lavender than a true shade of blue.
Many cultures attribute special meaning to flowers given as gifts. Often times, the gift of a blue flower indicates fantasy, and the desire to achieve something that is considered unattainable. The association of blue roses to his lost love could be an analogy for Majihal's refusal to see the reality of his love's aged and continued existence in his life, and the way he clings desperately to the illusion of her only as a young woman.
