Short summary

Jesse flashes back to the year 2027 of her time in the underground Resistance she was chosen for a life-altering mission aboard a submarine, the USS Jimmy Carter, to travel to her native Australia, but was diverted to a remote oil platform location to pick up a mysterious black box. Back in the present, Sarah and John plan to move out when they learn about Riley's murder and mistakenly think that Cameron killed her, despite Cameron's denials. John and Sarah debate whether or not to bring Cameron with them as the rift between all of them (started by Riley and Jesse in the first place) begins to widen even more with no one, not even Derek, suspecting Jesse of manipulating everything so John can destroy Cameron. Elsewhere at Zeira Corp., Weaver and Ellison search for Savannah after she tries to play a game of hide-and-seek with John Henry.

The terminator captain, Queeg, was likely named after Lt. Cmdr. Philip Francis Queeg, captain of the U.S.S. Caine in the The Caine Mutiny (1954)

In the narrative behind why Jesse killed Riley. Jesse had planned to kill Riley so she could frame Cameron for Riley's death and to destroy John's trust with Cameron and to manipulate both John and Sarah into thinking John's Terminator protector was responsible for Riley's death.

For a long time I didn't watch prime time television shows. Not since the 80's and early 90's anyway. Now for the past 3 years I have found my way back to them and have a chosen few to watch or at least I did. Now with the exception of Smallville and Supernatural every show I get hooked on has either been canceled or in danger of becoming so. Now it appears that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is now going to be a member of the lost and forgotten. What the heck I ask! I am sick of this! Back in the 80's shows actually lasted a while no matter where they were in the ratings. Now all of a sudden if a show isn't in the top 5 it gets canceled. This is seriously getting out of hand. I am tired of falling in love with a show and and then these money hungry producers and network executives pulling the plugs on them. I can sit here and list at least 6 that I was interested in that didn't last more than 1 season. C-Mon!!! The Sarah Connor Chronicles has taken some weird turns and sometimes doesn't even seem like it would fit in Terminator genre but still something about the shows still compels viewers to stick with it and watch. There is a lack of good sci-fi shows out there and now that they got one going it seems it's doomed to the failed TV show abyss. Please, stop the cancellation frenzy and let a TV show play out. If you have to, change the writers. A show isn't going to grab every kind of viewer but the faithful will stick with it. So be faithful to us as TV once was.

After the shocking conclusion to the previous episode, when Jesse killed Riley, John must come to terms with her death and decide what to do. He doesn't know what happened to her but has heard she was shot; almost like an execution. After Cameron's recent behaviour he naturally wonders if she was involved. This is of course just what Jesse wants him to think. Cameron's case isn't helped when Sarah finds her 'spare parts' taken from terminators she thought had been thoroughly burnt. Meanwhile former Agent Ellison is annoyed with 'John Henry' when he refuses to say where Catherine Weaver's daughter, Savannah, is hiding even though she sees it as part of his development. As well as these present events we see one of Jesse's missions in the future where she is aboard a submarine captained by a reprogrammed terminator on a mission to pick up a package for John Connor.

Being the first of a two part story this episode raises more questions than answers; how will John deal with Riley's death and will it further damage his relationship with Cameron being the most obvious. As the main story progressed it kept looking like John would believe Cameron was responsible for Riley's death despite his obvious desire to believe otherwise. The secondary present day story might not have been action packed but it was fun; I particularly liked the slightly creepy scene where various doors opened to lead Savannah to John Henry after her mother declined to play hide and seek with her. Garret Dillahunt does a fine job as the almost childlike John Henry and Shirley Manson is good as the mercurial Catherine Weaver… despite all we've seen her do I'm still unsure of her motivation. The future story was entertaining although the episode ended just as it looked as if there might be some real action… a nice hook for part two.
