I found I am a sex addict very entertaining and allowed my friend to convince me to come screen this earlier work by Zahedi with him. I figured I was in for more entertaining if not overly egocentric and under-edited auto-biographical documentary. Little did I know I was about to dedicate 73 minutes of self torture. First of all, Zahedi is obsessed with himself and finds the need to document the most banal aspects of his life. Secondly, he harasses his poor girlfriend repeatedly by waving a camera in her face for no real reason other than to further augment her depression (and considering her family history with her mother committing suicide, one might almost think he is trying to convince her to do the same). The man doesn't eat normal food and finds it to be a moral dilemma when he masturbates. If you are looking to watch an emaciated man document his sad and relatively uninteresting life, then look no further than this film. The quality is terrible and it had very few redeeming qualities. The reason most people's lives aren't documented is a good one, they aren't worth documenting. Mister Zahedi needs to get this through his head, he is not special. He has never been, and hopefully never will be. I hated this piece of self interested garbage and really hope he eats a hamburger or something because the guy looks like he just escaped from Auschwitz.

I'm not saying that anyone should ignore Zahedi's more recent works, because his film making as obviously improved or at least he is trying a little harder, but this film should be skipped. It was unappealing aesthetically and intellectually. I realize this review contains personal attacks, but the entire film was surrounding his personal life so I find it hard to avoid. If you do choose to sit through this film, consider yourself warned. Though it wasn't quite as bad as the remake of the Wicker Man...

I watched this film by Caveh Zahedi when it was on IFC a couple weeks ago. Caveh cracks me up! I recognized him from his role in Richard Linklater's film, Waking Life.. which was actually covered a little bit in this film.

Basically- Caveh keeps a video journal for the year of January 1999-January 1, 2000. IN this year- Caveh has several problems with his girlfriend he's living with- who doens't like getting put on camera. It leaves the viewer wanting to hear more about the resolutions to the arguments... but.. EHhhhh... nope. We're left shrouded in mystery! Overall- it's very interesting... a beautiful film actually-- shot with a Sony camcorder... Caveh sets up some interesting compositions with the camera...

Actually- Caveh suggested the musical group Innocence Mission in it- so I bought a CD... I LOVE THEM! haha- Thanks Caveh! I really suggest seeing this movie... Caveh's honesty is delightful. Sometimes sad.. sometimes depressing.. Always remarkable.

I must first congratulate Mr. Zahedi for being able get a grant to pay for part of this project. I wish him nothing but success in his film making career for things can only get better. I recorded this film as this was something my father needed to see although the reason for which now escapes me. These two vegetarians take you through moments of their daily lives and various encounters with their friends. At first I could not figure out what was going on as I started watching halfway through January, but it mattered not as this film had the visual magnetism of a car wreck, a train wreck and a Bulgratzian canoe wreck rolled into one. Mr. Zahedi's with his Syd Barrett like aura and his emotional, hardworking hippie chick companion who does not liked to be filmed kept you wondering what was around the next corner. Although she does not like to be filmed, Mr. Zahedi arranged for one of his friends to film her all day on her birthday as his special birthday gift to her. This film is not filtered whatsoever. Mr. Zahedi feels guilty about about eating pizza which he believes triggers him into wanting to pick up hookers. After the first instance of getting stoned it is apparent marijuana is a trigger for him to bring up the topic of her mother's suicide. The days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months and the months finally bring us to the end of the 90's and the beginning of the 00's. Finally on New Year's Eve our couple spend an intimate evening at home counting in the New Year and gleaming on Ecstasy. The message is that while meat and eating in general are bad for you; marijuana, magic mushrooms, Ecstasy and neurosis beyond imagination are all part of Mr. Zahedi's yearly struggle to not drown in the bathtub of the world. God bless Mr. Zahedi and God bless America because if this was any other country which California almost is we would not be free to do as we please which includes making or viewing this film.

Really, we're not all like that. There is a lot that can be said about vegetarians but this guy truly is not representative of the species. I just had to point that out because I keep reading about how he is a vegetarian as if that is relevant. I'm a vegan and I'm pretty boring but not nearly as boring as he is and I sure as Hell wouldn't record myself and expect people to watch it! I think he made a mistake in taking the ecstasy himself rather than give it to the audience. I know a good hit of X would might have made me enjoy watching it. I kept hoping it would have a really happy ending, that maybe his girlfriend finally gets some self esteem and shoots him but no such luck.
