Trailers "Switched at Birth "
Episode titles are named after art pieces.
When the series began, Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) were both supposed to be 15 (consequent to the show's premise, the characters share the same birthday). In reality Marano was 18 and Leclerc was 24, but their birthdays are less than a week apart.
The names Bay and Daphne are interchangeable - Bay is the type of tree that the mythological Daphne turned into while she was being chased by the God Apollo.
Revealed in the pilot script, Bay & Toby were supposed to have an 11 year old brother, Luke, who seemed to bond with Daphne well.
Travis mentions deaf baseball player Dummy Hoy. Ryan Lane, the actor who plays Travis, previously portrays Dummy Hoy in I See The Crowd Roar: The Story of William Dummy Hoy (2007).
Even though Meredith Baxter plays Lea Thompson's mother she's only 14 years older than her. Both women have also played Michael J Fox's mother, Meredith Baxter in Family Ties and Lea Thompson in the Back to the Future Trilogy.
Like the Twigg/Mays real-life birth swap (upon which the TV movie Switched at Birth (1991) was based), one of the mothers is named Regina.
Many of the actors who played hearing characters in the show did not know American Sign Language before receiving the part.
Bay and Daphne's birthday is October 22, 1995.
Vanessa Marano and Max Lloyd-Jones starred opposite each other in the Lifetime movie, Restless Virgins (2013). They also date in both Switched at Birth and Restless Virgins.
Max Lloyd-Jones and Sean Berdy first collaborated together in The Sandlot 2. Sean Berdy would later portray the role of Emmett Bledsoe, one of the main characters on Switched at Birth, and Max Lloyd-Jones would later portray the role of Noah, a recurring character in season 2a of Switched at Birth.
The two main deaf characters are Daphne and Emmett. One of them is deaf in real life, the other is slightly hard of hearing and grew up unaffected by it.
Vanessa Marano (Bay Kennish) has a sister named Laura Marano who is also an actress. Laura has never acted in Switched at Birth, but when Vanessa was asked to bring in photos of herself for the set, she brought in photos of both her and her sister. In season 3 episode 17 - "Girl With Death Mask (She Plays Alone)" - Bay visits her cousin, and he shows her a picture of her deceased, biological aunt. Laura is the aunt in the picture.
Lea Thompson plays Kathryn; her real middle name is Kathleen.
Bay's Real Name Is Bay Madeline Kennish
Bess Armstrong and Lea Thompson co-starred together previously in Jaws 3-D in (1979)
Second time that Lea Thompson plays a role named Katherine (the first time was in SpaceCamp (1986)).
The font from the opening credits is called Chalet Paris 1960. This same font was used in the opening/closing credits of Back to the Future, starting Lea Thompson.
Melody (Marlee Matlin) opposes Emmett's relationship with Bay, because she believes that a hearing person cannot truly love and relate to a deaf person. In Children of a Lesser God (1986), Sarah (Matlin's Academy Award-winning feature film debut role) faced similar deaf-community opposition because of her relationship with a hearing man.
In Switched at Birth, Vanessa Marano plays Bay, a girl who did a science project and found out that she is switched at birth. In Gilmore girls, she plays April, a girl who did a science project and found out that Luke Danes was her father
Lizzy Weiss has said that someone will get pregnant in season 4.
Toby's Son Carlton was diagnosed with a genetic chromosome affected condition called Down Syndrome.
Toby's son is named after Carlton school for the deaf, the same school that Bay and Daphne attended.
