Any rumors caught your ear lately? Junior Asparagus and Laura Carrot start spreading rumors, which spread over Bumblyburg like a weed - threatening to engulf the whole town. Larry-Boy arrives and convinces them that God doesn't want us to tell stories that hurt people; He wants us to spread nice words.

Trailers "Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed (1999)"

Phil Vischer envisioned this as one of the last (if not _the_ last) half-hour VeggieTales videos, as he pushed the company towards feature-film production. As a result, everything in this video pushed the envelope far beyond what any previous video had done - from the high-end background paintings, to the 85-voice mens' choir and string section soundtrack. Unfortunately, the first feature film (Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002)) failed to return its significant investment and bankrupted the company, which was bought in 2003 and continues to produce the half-hour format shows.

The theater at the beginning of the episode is located at the corner of Vischer and Nawrocki streets (named after VeggieTales creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki).

The first VeggieTales cartoon in which Bob the Tomato does not appear.

Towards the end of production, Big Idea did some test rendering on their new software system. The tests were the tunnel in which Larry confronts the mother weed - making these some of the highest-quality graphics in a VeggieTales video to date.

Because the Larry-Boy videos are intentionally more intense than a typical VeggieTales video, Phil Vischer considered dropping the VeggieTales name from this episode.

After having received some negative feedback on the lack of female characters in Larry-Boy! And the Fib from Outer Space! (1997), it was decided that the next villain would be female. Thus, the rumor weed's personality was based on Joan Rivers, and inspired by her trademark "Can We Talk?" line. The studio then received flak on stereotyping, because the "gossipy" character was female.

Although he had appeared in several episodes, this was the first one where Dad Carrot had any lines. Big Idea held an internal open audition, and film editor John Wahba got the part - despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that his Egyptian accent made his acting almost incomprehensible, he made everyone laugh.

EASTER EGG: From the main menu, select "Features", then go left. You will see a large Sheriff's star. Press Enter to see a rare trailer for this film. The trailer was never distributed because it was deemed "too dark" for kids (it's more like a Batman (1989) style movie trailer). The trailer is introduced by Kurt Heinecke, discussing the custom score he wrote for the trailer.

According to the audio commentary on the DVD, when watching for the first time the rendering of the scene where the Rumor Weed is defeated, Mike Nawrocki "audibly screamed" when the Rumor Weed burst into a flower.

EASTER EGG: From the Fun menu, select "How To Draw Larry Boy", then go left. You will see a large Sheriff's star. Press Enter to see storyboard sequences for two scenes. The soundtrack, however, is the original actors' voices, without post-production pitch-shifting.

EASTER EGG: From the Features menu, select "Audio Commentary", then go right. You will see a large Sheriff's star. Press Enter to see Phil Vischer discussing the auditions for Dad Carrot's voice, and how John Wahba got the part.

EASTER EGG (sort of): On the Fun menu, complete the Larry-Boy trivia, with no mistakes, and there is an option to watch a bonus video. The video is a computer screen shot, with Phil Vischer narrating as he uses Big Idea's rendering software to manipulate the models for the Rumor Weed and Larry Boy.

When Scooter is in his police car near the beginning of the video, the car radio is playing 'I Can Be Your Friend' from 'The Gourds Must Be Crazy'.

Spoofing Batman, Larry Boy and the Rumor Weed delivers the laughs we've come to expect from those limbless vegetables. The thing I found odd was this was the first Veggie Tales to not feature Bob the Tomato...doesn't matter, Larry's everyone's favorite, right?

Remember that old cereal motto, "Kid Friendly, Mother Approved?" Same with Veggie Tales-"Kid Friendly, Adult enthused!"

Junior Asparagus and Laura Carrot learn how easily rumors can be started when they tell one about Alfred. Before they know it, their little story is spreading all over Bumblyburg like a weed! Only Larry-Boy can save the day, he hopes. This video, along with the rest in the VeggieTales series, is full of laughs for kids, but at the same time manages to pack much humor that adults will connect with as well. You will never grow tired of this video!

"Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed" is a 35-minute animated short film from 1999, so only two more years and this one has its 20th anniversary. The name of writer, director and cast member Phil Vischer maybe tells you already that this is another Veggie Tale, one of the longer ones actually. The title tells you that the focus is on rumors this time and we have a true antagonist in here: the rumor weed, an initially tiny plant that keeps growing bigger and bigger the more rumors are spread. I like antagonists and I think the weed was probably among the better aspects of this film for sure. But the goody guys were just really boring. And the story, or I should say the lesson perhaps, was not good enough for this runtime either. 20 minutes may have been sufficient. As a whole this was one of the weaker Veggie Tales I have seen, even if it is among the more known. It also lacks considerably in the music department. The songs are just not that good to be honest. It's a shame because I feel the subject is one of the best from the series, thus the popularity perhaps, and it would have deserved a much better take. This time Vischer's honorable approach and good meaning are not enough. Thumbs-down from me and I don't recommend checking it out.
