Short summary

Crime-novelist Paul Temple solves mysteries with the help of his wife Steve.

Only 16 of the 52 editions are currently known to survive. Of these, the final five episodes exist only exist as monochrome film prints returned from New Zealand. It is believed that BetaFilm and/or ZDF in Germany may hold copies of every edition from the second season onwards, though whether these exist is presently unclear; certainly it seems the soundtracks would be dubbed if so. To further muddy the waters, it appears that the German prints may feature alternative footage which UK viewers never saw, and vice versa. Such differences even extend to the credits.

There were several differences of opinion between the BBC and the Munich-based backers. The Germans were very keen on Ros Drinkwater as Steve (the BBC were reportedly less sure of her) and wanted to toughen up the stories, increase the action sequences and make the Temples appear more affluent. This 'interference' may have led to the show's demise.

This was the first series the BBC made as an international co-production. UK prints credit Taurus Films as co-producers, whilst the German version refer to ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen). This was very much due to creator Francis Durbridge's popularity in Germany (although the author himself did not write for the show) and allowed the series to venture overseas and widen its casting base. The videotape masters were apparently copied onto colour film to air in Germany.

Francis Matthews was Durbridge's first choice for the lead rôle, having worked with him in the past.

Francis Matthews considered the fourth and final season to have the best scripts.

Доктор Кто (1963) producer Peter Bryant was transferred onto it by the BBC to replace Alan Bromly and help lift what was perceived to be an ailing series following the first run. He was soon joined by Derrick Sherwin, who had been his story editor on Doctor Who and had briefly succeeded him to produce Patrick Troughton's departure story and Jon Pertwee's debut story. Sherwin insisted that he would only do it if he was made a full co-producer on Paul Temple. Doctor Who's uncredited script assistant Trevor Ray also moved across to help address story issues.

Paul Temple, in my opinion, is the most under-rated television show in history. I used to watch the show when it was first screened (in Australia) in the early 70's and I became a big fan of the show. I wish I could see this again if they ever release this fantastic show on DVD. I would be the first to buy it. Francis Matthews was perfect casting for the part of the lead character Paul Temple. Also, Ros Drinkwater was perfect as his assistant "Steve". The stories were always original and kept you interested and guessing until the very end. The acting from both the lead and supporting cast members was always top-notch. Let's just hope that the BBC releases these fantastic episodes very soon so that everyone might enjoy them as I have.

Paul Temple is a wonderful example of classic British television at its best. Today, it is an overlooked and rare bird. I watched all the series on RTV2 in Hong Kong, and was particularly pleased when Paul Temple and his wife Steve traded in their Hillman Imp for a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow drophead couple by Mulliner Park Ward. So much more fitting for the character! Francis Matthews was perfectly cast in the lead role, and Ros Drinkwater was a natural for his wife, Steve. The plots, although not always surprising, were engaging, and the guest roles were filled by many top UK actors and actresses of the day. Ron Grainer's superlative theme song is absolutely perfect, and seemingly impossible to find in any recordings.
