Short summary

The whole family is invited to Jay and Gloria's for some barbecue and football. However an earlier incident at school between Manny and Luke makes things very awkward for Gloria and Claire, and then things escalate when a not-so-flattering label is uttered.

When Phil talks to Gloria about how long it took Jay to accept him he says that "by that time Mitchell had brought Cam home". Given the time frame established in the pilot that means Phil and Claire had been married for 11 years before Jay accepted him.

The introduction of the "double question" which has become a mainstay device throughout the series. Cam asks, after Mitchell says Cam loved scrap booking, "Did I Mitchell? Did I?" Mitch even calls it out, responding "Don't do the 'double question to prove a point' thing."

The episode is titled after the phrase "gold digger".

A big football game is coming. Everyone is going to Jay's house to watch it and the old man is dreading the occasion. He does not want any interruptions, which he figured will be part of the situation as his clan gathers around the set. Since he cannot avoid having the family, he tries to appear nonchalant about it.

Phil and Claire are called to come to Luke's school because the boy got into a fight with another boy. Little do they realize, who the other boy is: Manny. It appears Luke resented being called nephew by his step- uncle Manny, a boy about his same age. The principal is a bit confused with two sets of parents that, in addition, are closely related with one another.

Cam is all excited about the upcoming game. He is a bid football fan. But Mitch, on the other hand, is not too pleased with the game, and the reunion with his family. Cam even dresses Lily in a 'zebra' referee outfit. Mitch tries to get information about the game before hand, but it is obvious he does not have it in him to like the game.

Even though the boys made up, Gloria is still upset at having been called a "coal digger" by Claire. Phil tries to intervene, without much success. In fact, he goes to talk to Gloria in her room. She is so mad that she tells Phil she does not care for Jay's money and begins to throw her frilly underwear at him. Claire, coming to apologize, is not too happy watching her husband among all the skimpy underclothes. Claire's apology does not move Gloria. Claire declares she means it and she will throw herself into the pool to prove her repentance is for real. The incident brings everyone to the pool and one by one, they end in the pool.

Jason Winer directed this funny episode. Christopher Lloyd, one of the creators of the series directed. This chapter was a lot of fun as Gloria and Claire go at it to square off their differences. Good acting by all the cast.

This is another early episode of the show that puts all the characters together and then watches the sparks fly.

Sofía Vergara has been great as Gloria since day one, and gives a great performance here. I loved her standing up for herself against Julie Bowen's Claire.

Although the teens haven't been given much to do as yet, the rest of the cast are shining in their roles.
