Millie was very sweet, but kind of a twit, and was always getting into trouble, thanks to her penchant for sticking her nose into other peoples' business. Maggie was more level-headed, and was usually pressed into action trying to extricate Millie (and herself) from whatever trouble she had gotten herself into. Mr. Beauchamp was their stuffy English boss, Miss Fosdyke his secretary and Bert was Millie's uncle.
