Short summary

During a period of fiscal austerity for the city, Enright takes a lucrative position in a private detective agency in which a person blackmailing politicians might operate.

John Schuck as Commissioner McMillan's aide Sergeant Enright goes undercover in this one as himself. I should say that he 'retires' from the force and goes to work for a private detective agency headed by Don Porter. It's a case, someone has been blackmailing a lot of politicians and it all seems to be coming from the confidential files amassed by this firm. Porter has files on everybody, probably the best selection of them this side of J. Edgar Hoover.

But Schuck's undercover is one with a few safety nets because he'll need them. He's not the only undercover. It also gets deadly serious when one of the blackmailed politicians is murdered and it's made to look like a suicide attempt.

The investigation centers on the four top men at Porter's firm. John Vernon, Graham Jarvis, and James Olson, not to forget Porter himself. Whoever is doing this has considerable resources behind them and won't be easy to take down.

A good collection of cast members including Meredith Baxter Birney as Sgt. Enright's girlfriend and Murray Hamilton as one of the politicians make a great ensemble.

This episode was certainly relevant for our times. It dealt with elected officials being blackmailed for past indiscretions, whether major or just plain cheating on a college exam 20 years before.

As a result, Sgt. John Schuck goes under cover to work for an agency under suspicion for doing the blackmailing. He supposedly leaves the force and is even given a luncheon in his honor. This situation is really kept quiet so that McMillan's wife doesn't even know what is going on. She is always a real confidant to her husband, Rock Hudson, the police commissioner.

It was never entirely clear if the entire agency was under investigation or just certain individuals.

As Mildred, the McMillan cook, Nancy Walker, with her red pony-tail is rather subdued here.
