Short summary
The film follows the fall of Satan from the kingdom of Heaven and his subsequent journey through Pandemonium, Purgatory and Chaos on his way to corrupt the virgin Earth. Trunk Animation directors Alasdair Brotherston and Jock Mooney, alongside producer Richard Barnett, assembled a team of twelve animators, artists and compositors, who worked continuously over three months, taking their main inspiration from the first three books of John Milton's 'Paradise Lost', while also drawing on details from across all twelve volumes. The hand-drawn animation depicts various facets from the poem, from which 'Rattle That Lock' lyricist Polly Samson drew her inspiration. The poem itself encompasses twelve books, concerning the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
The song begins with the four notes, created by Michaël Boumendil, which precede announcements at French SNCF railway stations which David Gilmour recorded on his iPhone at Aix-en-Provence station.
The song "Rattle That Lock" was inspired by and makes use of the SNCF jingle, composed by Michaël Boumendil, which Gilmour heard and recorded on his iPhone at Aix-en-Provence station while traveling to visit friends. When Boumendil first got a phone message from Gilmour, he thought it might be a prank, so didn't return the call.
The lyrics for the track were written by Gilmour's wife and long time collaborator, Polly Samson and are based around the themes of Book II of John Milton's Paradise Lost. The music video is also inspired by these themes.
