This is a well-focused yet lyrical film that opens the audience to a consideration of why a Zen temple might be built in the mountains of Kentucky. It begins with views from local residents who openly express their fears and misunderstandings...then moves into a thoughtful and unbiased listening to the land, the temple, and the members of this small Zen gathering...In their talk we get a sense of what a contemplative life might be about...You hear what's there, with no interference from the filmmakers. The fellow who founded and directs the center was teaching psychology at Kent State University during the shootings of 1970...he traveled for a while seeking some understanding and found it in the practice of Zen at the top of a mountain in Kentucky. The biggest misunderstanding is his wish to "do nothing" with the land...in fact to practice the art of doing nothing well. Extremely well done and relaxing...a meditation in itself.
