Soppington is unfortunate in not knowing when to stop when he takes a social glass with a friend, and this is why we see him a little bit the worse for wear being hastily and not very ceremoniously shown to the door of a well-known café. Two thugs who were witnesses of Soppington's ignominious treatment at the hands of the proprietor of the café, follow him as he picks himself up on the sidewalk and assist him to a nearby lamp-post, where they safely anchor him by removing his coat and then putting it on again, not forgetting to envelop the lamp-post as well as Soppington's poor bruised body in its comfortable folds. After having so solicitously seen to his welfare and having thoughtfully removed all his valuables in case any unscrupulous person should come along and rob the helpless man, the thugs start off and leave poor Soppington squirming and wriggling in a vain effort to get away.
