Pelle's brother has been missing for a month when a mysterious phone call tells him to watch the top rated reality show, Public Enemy Number One. It's a nasty piece of work where contestants tape their murders and battle it out to be the top killer for that year. When Pelle sees the episode in question he realizes the brutal chainsaw murder was filmed in his brother's apartment. Going there, he searches to find out if the footage is real. Little does he know that he's stepped into ground zero for a pitched battle of famous past Public Enemies and those who would take their place.

Trailers "Naked Beneath the Water (2006)"

Director Sean Cain took the lead role of Pelle Svanslos only after he couldn't find any actors willing to go through the heavy-duty torture scenes required for the part. During the course of the movie, Pelle was to be tied up, beaten and have his head shaved on camera.

Actress Bonnie Steiger who plays TV host Sharon Sharalike in the movie is a real-life television personality in the San Francisco Bay Area with her shows, Movie Close Up and Below San Francisco. In her twenty-something years doing this she's interviewed such actors and directors as: Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger, John Waters, Divine, Kitten Natividad, 'Tab Hunter' and Paul Bartel.

Producer Melanie Doyle plays seven roles in the film. Not only is she the pregnant lady who loses her baby, but she's also a stand-in for Isdora during the gun battle, a P.E. Swat team member, a security guard in the elevator, the voice over for postpartum depression, a devious poisoner and a fan of The Shaver.

After principal photography was completed in late 2005 Cain decided he wanted more action sequences. It was his relationship with fellow director Jeff Leroy that helped him to achieve that goal. Leroy, known for his miniature effects, built a replica of the Los Angeles location and then blew it up. The most expensive scene in the movie not only included the pyrotechnics to match up the miniature explosions with the real location, but scores of extras dressed up as policemen, firefighters and sign wielding fans of the movie's protagonist, The Shaver.

"Naked Beneath the Water" was originally self-released by director Sean Cain in 1995 on VHS through underground magazines like "Film Threat" and "Alternate Cinema". The new DVD version released in 2006 only retains about 40% of that original film.

After watching the 1995 version of Naked Beneath the Water, director Victor Salva trimmed a drug overdose scene in his film, Bad Heat - Highway des Todes (1995). He said the violence in this film made him sick to his stomach. He would then go on, years later, to direct the extremely violent, Jeepers Creepers - Es ist angerichtet (2001).

Director, Frank Henenlotter wanted to release the 1995 version through Something Weird Video, but because there was only a temp score until the DVD version came along the film had been collecting dust on a shelf.

I saw this movie at a screening a few months ago and I really liked it. Horror movies aren't usually my thing but my friends were going so I saw it. Of course it had all the typical stuff like blood and breasts and gore. It also had the most gruesome scene ever! I almost couldn't look. But it was also an intelligent and original movie with a story that kept me interested until the end. It's the story of Pelle. His brother is missing and he goes down to San Francisco to try and find out what happened to him. It appears that his brother's disappearance might have something to do with a reality show called Public Enemy Number One. A show where people vie for Public Enemy of the year by sending in home made videos of murders. In my opinion, when you see this at a video store near you, it's worth picking up.

I had a tough day busting baddies so I was in a desperate need to chill. I came across this film. The title caught my eye. I will investigate anything "Naked."

I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the setting -San Francisco. The subject is timely. All these reality shows. Well this one's a doozy, talk about twisted entertainment.

Does this picture deliver? For an Indie/low budget production... In spades: bombs, blood, guts and breasts!!

The writer/director has an original vision, that's for sure.

    Definitely worth checking out.

I watch a lot of movies, and this is one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. The plot has everything to be desired. It delivers big for being a low budget movie. The writer/director is a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stale Hollywood scene. The story is new, and by far better than most of the blockbusters out on the big screen today. If you are looking for something different, then take a chance on this one. I know you'll be impressed. With the movies twists, and turns it will leave you glued to your seat waiting to see what happens next. The director will be around for a long time to come. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

I was fortunate enough to see the film when it played at the Sunset 5 at midnight. It's played in my mind over the past couple of months. Very strong visual style and lots of amazing sequences.

Overall I really enjoyed the movie although there were moments where it kind of slowed down towards the middle, but really picked up at the 3/4 mark. I was totally surprised and didn't see coming what was going to happen. For being a lower budgeted movie the filmmakers really did a lot! I can't wait to see it on DVD and pick up what I missed the first time.

My favorite part was the segments of the Public Enemy TV show & all the dark humor towards reality television. I wouldn't be surprised that some day we see something like the Public Enemy thing on the boob tube.

One benefit of low-budget horror films is that there are plenty of strange characters out there that will act for free. This film has those and some gruesome - very gruesome - scenes of murder and mayhem as people compete on a new reality show for Public Enemy #1.

Pelle (writer/director Sean Cain) is looking for his brother Robert (Jim Wright), and, well. that would give it away, wouldn't it.

The main problem from these low-budget films, aside from lack of acting talent, is the reluctance to provide visual stimulation where appropriate. Except for a brief flash in the beginning, there was nothing else worth seeing in this film. Come on, if you are going to title your film Naked beneath the water, lets see something naked!
