Harvey Carignan was sentenced to death in 1949 but escaped the hangman's noose thanks to an appellate court ruling. That and his parole in 1960 was bad news for a large number of women. His first murder was committed in Alaska; moving to Washington State he was sentenced to another 9 years for lesson crimes, and again was paroled.

Somehow he managed to marry twice, both his brides were widows. He became a suspect in the murders of half a dozen young women. Today, DNA profiling would surely have put him behind bars, but it was not until he attacked a young woman in September 1974 that his luck ran out. Gwen Burton survived, and he received a total of 150 years for the attack on her, another assault, and two murders in Minnesota.

How many murders he committed in total will never be known. This short documentary speaks to officers involved in bringing him to book, and to Carignan himself, although he appears only on audio. Strange you never heard of this guy, even though he could give Ted Bundy a run for his money.
