Music Director A. R. Rahman's debut Hindi film with an original score, all previous Hindi scores were dubbed from his Tamil scores.

It was after the release of Rangeela that Aamir Khan stopped attending Filmfare Awards. He had become upset that he did not win, or even be nominated for, the 1995 Best Actor award for his performance in the film. He also felt that for films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993) that he should have gotten recognition from Filmfare, and after these incidents he became upset with Filmfare. But after failing to receive recognition for Rangeela is when Aamir had had enough and decided to shun Filmfare altogether.

Gulshan Grover's character is an impersonation of noted Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. His character's name is Steven Kapoor, a Bollywood director who aspires to compete with Hollywood directors like Spielberg and Coppola. Coincidently, Steven Kapur is the name of famous singer Apache Indian.

John Abraham's tapori look in the film Welcome Back (2015) was inspired from Aamir Khan's look in the film.

The actress during the shoot with Jackie Shroff during one sequence who complains about a lot and is accompanied with her mother is a parody on Sridevi. It was said during the 80s, when Sridevi was at her peak of her success her mother was very dominating on set and ordered producers and directors.

The film was conceived with Sridevi in mind for the title role.

Manish Malhotra, a celebrity fashion designer, became a known fashion designer after he designed for Urmila in the film.

Aamir Khan's Tapori look and Urmila's glamorous look had become quite famous those days.

It is the single longest running movie in Nepali theaters. When it was out of a major theater in Kathmandu, people protested and brought it back for another run.

Salman Khan was considered for Jackie Shroff's role.

Anil Kapoor was offered Jackie Shroff's role but declined due to lack of dates.

The scene in which Producer PC mentions that the film Hum Aapke Hain Koun! (1994) was actually his concept and his script but he gave the script to Sooraj Bharjatrya, is actually a parody on Bollywood Producers who all tell false stories about their achievements in the industry.

This movie was remade in Hollywood in the year 2004 as Win a date with Tad Hamilton.

Madhur Bhandarkar, who worked as an Assistant Director for the movie, has a special appearance as Movie Producer P.C's Assistant.

Raveena Tandon was also initially considered for the main lead along with Sridevi. However, later Urmila was cast.

Aamir Khan used his own clothes for his character, and he took some old clothes from his friends too.

Hip Hop group Black Eye Peas sampled the song " Hai Rama" for their song "Mare".

Aditya Narayan, the son of Udit Narayan makes an appearance in the song Rangeela Re and he also sings some lines in the song.

AR Rahman won the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent which was the very first award of its kind after the death of legendary Music Director RD Burman.

Jackie Shroff won the Filmfare best supporting actor award.

The music of the film was launched by AR Rahman's mother Kareema in September 1995.

Rangeela marked the return of the then 62-year-old veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle, who sang two super hit songs for the movie. Asha, like her sister Lata Mangeshkar, had long retired from accepting playback singer awards, but she received the Filmfare Special Award that year for her rendition of the song "Tanha Tanha".

In the opening song "Rangeela Re",now famous choreographer and director Remo D'Souza appear as a background dancer.

The film was a major breakthrough for Urmila's career it also established her as a famous actress.

Gulshan Grover's character of director Steven Kapoor is referred to Steven Spilberg and Shekar Kapoor.

Shah Rukh Khan was offered the role of Munna but declined since he didn't think a tapori character would go well with his "romantic image" that he had begun developing at the time.

Steven Kapoor is actually a parody on Shekhar Kapoor, a director from the UK who didn't fit in well with the industry because of their ways of working and often compared himself to Hollywood directors when he was in the industry. He often would walk out of projects because this attitude and eventually he ended making films in Hollywood.

Despite its success Aamir Khan never worked with RGV and Urmila again.

Bollywood Brass Band did a instrumental version of all the songs called "Rangeela Medley". This was in the album Rahmania.

The song Tanhaa Tanhaa Yahan Pe was remixed in the album BMW 3 Bad Mad Wicked by DJ Jiten. This was the first ever remix done for the song in 1996.

In 1977, producer R.C.Kumar was making a film titled "Rangeela" starring Feroz Khan, directed by Brij Sadanah. The film got shelved.

The Cap Aamir wearing in Rangeela is the same cap he is wearing in Andaz Apna Apna

Ashwini Bhave was in the running for the lead role.

The shooting of Rangeela was started in 1994 with Goa outdoor schedule. There were some scenes between Jackie and Urmila and also the song tanha tanha picturized.

Film's cinematographer WB Rao also played a small role appearing as a cinematographer to director Steven Kapoor (played by Gulshan Grover).

To get into the role of a Mumbaiya Tapori, Aamir Khan actually spent some of his time with Real Taporis in the real slums of Mumbai. Aamir worked on his diction, dialogue delivery and body language to portray the character convincingly.

Director Ramgopal Verma was apparently not happy with Saroj Khan's choreography of 'Tanha Tanha'. So he appointed Ahmed Khan to choreograph rest of the songs.

Rangeela remains Director RGV's only successful musical film. After that he shifted his focus to thriller and gangster films. Although he attempted to make another love story movie 'Mast' in 1999. That film could not replicate the success of Rangeela.

The movie name 'Rangeela' was based on the fictional movie's name which introduces actress 'Mili' played by Urmila Matondkar. Actress Urmila Matondkar who became synonymous after the success of the film besides two established male superstars Jackie Shroff and Aamir Khan. The term 'Rangeela' in Hindi is a male term and because of that Ms.Urmila would often be termed by the media as 'Rangeeli' (female term) in publications and in popular culture.

Director Ram Gopal Varma often consider 'Rangeela' as his worst film.

Music composer A.R. Rahman also did the background score for this film.

Actress Urmila Matondkar was not a trained dancer while the time to filming of the movie.

Child actor turned choreographer Ahmed Khan's debut film as the independent choreographer.

Actor Rajesh Joshi who played Aamir Khan's friend Pakiya died soon after in a road accident. He was actor Manoj Joshi's sibling.

Actor Aamir and Director RGV fell out after Rangeela, both vowing they'd never work with the other.

While one-half of Urmila's Tanha Tanha number was shot in Goa, the other half had to be shot in Madh Island. And no one could tell the difference.

According to Director RGV 'Rangeela' was homage to two of his favorite Hollywood films, The Sound Of Music and Singing In The Rain. The choreography was inspired by 'Singing In The Rain'.

According to Director RGV one of his favorite film 'The Sound Of Music' was the first film he had seen which had no antagonist. So he consciously avoided negative characters in Rangeela.

Ram Gopal Varma previously worked with Urmila in the movie 'Drohi'. During Drohi, the choreographer didn't turn up for a song. So he asked Urmila if she would dance on her own and she agreed. And she did a great job. That's when the director decided to make Rangeela with Urmila.

Aamir's character was based on a street thug Director RGV knew in Hyderabad. When he narrated Rangeela to Aamir he agreed immediately.

The Aguada fort in Goa has been an integral part of a lot of iconic scene in this movie.

To get into the role of Munna - a tapori - for Rangeela, actor Aamir Khan spent time with real vagabonds in slums of Mumbai. This helped Aamir work on his diction, dialogue delivery and body language to portray the character convincingly.

Rangeela was the movie that started a new era in Hindi movies - one where the heroines started wearing skimpy outfits without looking vulgar. Prior to this I remember shuddering at Karishma Kapoor's crass numbers in Raja Babu and Khuddar.

This was a movie that was the turning point for 4 major film personalities:

    1. Ram Gopal Verma: He was a pretty good director with movies like Shiva in his repertoire, but Rangeela was the movie that really made people sit up and take notice. Subsequently RGV delivered several movies of style and substance, though he did generate some stinkers.

    2. A. R. Rehman: OK, this is an unfair statement. Rehman entered the major league with his very first score in Roja. But Rangeela was his first score for a Hindi movie. And what a success it was! It had several foot-tapping numbers, a lot of which are popular even today.

    3. Aamir Khan: I became a big fan of Aamir when I watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. I later watched some of his earlier movies and really loved his performances. But his performance in Rangeela was mind-blowing. The ease with which he slipped into the "Munna" persona was really praiseworthy and marked a turning point in his career. Hereon he started picking up roles with more nuances and challenges and became a veritable hit as an actor and the industry started referring to him as a "perfectionist".

    4. Urmilla: Oh Urmilla! I remember watching the trailers of this movie and thinking, "This movie will survive on the lack of Urmilla's clothes". It probably did, but while watching the movie not once was I thinking about what she was wearing. Prior to Rangeela it was customary for Hindi film heroines to dress up in a manner that did not offend Indian sensibilities. Actresses like Karishma Kapoor and Mamta Kulkarni were frowned upon and in general considered B-grade actresses. Urmilla blew the theory out of the water with this film and overnight established herself as a sensation after quite an indifferent start to her career (I am discounting Masoom, which she did as a child actress). Several of her scenes are referred to even today in reverent terms, albeit in a comical manner: Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Khan referred to the "Banian on a beach" while MC'ing for the Filmfare Awards in 2004, nearly 10 years after the movie. Urmilla in subsequent movies has proved that she can do a lot more than look sexy.

Does the movie have flaws? I would be surprised if it didn't. It stretched the limits of believability a bit thin and some songs didn't need to be present. But I am not complaining. For a ticket price of Rs. 15 those days, it was great value for money. And thanks for boosting four personalities who have, since, been a source for high-value and high-class entertainment!

Rangeela, released in 1995 was and will ever be one of the finest works of art by a complete team of cast and crew members. From among all the slew of films that were made at that time, this one was the topgun and the undisputed champion. This product is right from the top shelf and even exceeded the great expectations that reviewers have! It is the fusion of the Reel and Real which enables this film to stand on its own philosophy. There are some grand principles and ideas conveyed within the story in a style and manner which even a child can understand and enjoy. This is a terrific combined effort from the team of Aamir Khan, Ram Gopal Varma and AR Rahman. The application of the industry aspects and the in-film director, Steven Kapoor played by Gulshan Grover are so wonderfully plotted that all Jackie Shroff has to do is to fit into the in-film hero which he has done very well. Above all, this is a perfect showcase of Aamir Khan's colorful personality in a role which is almost contrary to his own "known" character. I wonder if anybody else could have pulled out such a performance the way Aamir has done in this film. His humor and style in this film are a display of pure brilliance and true talent. In one statement, this film has a touch of everything and the observant viewer shall catch the theme which he grasps. If the fate of the lovers gets painful, there is always the glamour and dance of Urmila to focus on and when that gets unrealistic, there is the jolt from the blue that transports the watcher out of the dream onto hard reality! A Classic work of art and science (The spectral recording of the soundtracks) from a gem of a team of artists- Rangeela has all the colors of the movie industry within it!

Rangeela is a nice, significant little movie, consedering it's release time, when it was fit and famous to release bigstar love-stories, along came Rangeela, who dared to be... different.

The story evolves around Munna (Aamir Khan) & Milli (Urmila), Milli is a girl from the city of Mumbai who is a backup dancer in Bollywood movies, Aamir is a tenant who lives in the same apartment as Milli, he is a streetthug who makes a living by selling black cinema tickets. In turn of events Milli ends up with a role in a big Bollywood movie, and the world around her changes. Munna once her best friend, is in love with her but because this new turn in her life, get cut off...

The movie lacks certain grip, the greatest flaw here lays in the editing, the movie moves along smoothly but the editing lacks sharpness.

Other than this the movie is a must watch for every Bollywood fan, the music is marvelous (prehaps one of Rahman's best, next to Taal), the storyline is clever and refreshing, it dares to stand out, and portrays the aspect of love on a whole different level. The acting, the acting is just SUPER!!!, Aamir is the true star of the movie, he outshines everybody in every scene, Aamir has given a performance of a lifetime in the face of Munna. From the "AC idhar ghuma" dialogue to playing hurt from loosing his love to perfection. There is nobody in Bollywood who could have played the role of Munna like Aamir has, Urmila played a nice lovely girl and she did her role justice, Jackie plays a moviestar, but due to lack of meatyness in his character it's not one of his best, but there was no substitute to his charm

I gave this movie a 10, a rare high grade from me, but due to it's flaws Rangeela is and forever will be a Bollywood classics, it's great musical score throughout, the refreshing script and the marvelous acting will forever guarantee that

A must watch for every Bollywood fan, and a piece of art for every Aamir Khan fan.

Rangeela is a great musical hindi movie. It is stylishly edited and directed by Ram Gopal Verma which helps quicken the pace between the seven or so songs throughout the movie.

But it is definitely Aamir Khan who steals the show in the movie as an uneducated but street wise slacker. Aamir always chooses challenging roles that are different from the mainstream hindi cinema. He has great talent a great range as an actor and this movie along with Akele Hum Akele Tum are some of his best.

The story is kind of light and predictable, but the songs and urmila will keep you happy.

I loved Rangeela since the first day I've seen it. I first saw it in 1995. I started to like Urmilla. She looked really cute. I appreciated Aamir Khan's role. He usually plays the innocent quiet dude. But the Munna I saw was a remarkable act that any man in this film industry would die to have. Even in Ghulam his acting was as gr8 as a KHANDALA!! He got me in tears. It is now 2000 & I own the movie & I love it!! The songs done by A.R Rehman were good. It is a film that n-e-1 would love to see. I have a list of my favorite TOP 20 films ever. & Rangeela is 3rd. I felt bad that Aamir didn't win for Best Actor. Why is it that there is always some1 who backs his way up? I mean DDLJ just took over(my 2nd fave film.) It is upsetting that he didn't get an award. I mean Jackie got best supporting actor & Urmilla got appreciated. Ever since I saw the film, Mili was a name I loved. Our family's name of the fish is MILI. We all love Urmilla in my house. We all definitely loved Aamir from the start. His best film was JJWS, & Rangeela just led him to even more success. Jackie was a gr8 guy in the film not telling MILI of his love for her. I respected @ the fact that he gave her up to make her & Munna happy. He knows that TANHA TANHA YAHA PE JEENA, YEH KOI BAAT HAI?? Overall to be on my TOP 3 films is a good thing b/c I probably watch 300-400 films a year & most of them end up on my boring list.Rangeela is a film that will always be in my heart & the 3rd best film ever. The music by A.R was unbeatable.Esp. Tanha tanha. Asha did a good job & so did the lyrics by Mehboob. The area & background of this film was awesome. RANGEELA-I LOVE YOU.love 1 of the gr8 experienced rangeeli fans-anisha datta!!

An aspiring actress, a love triangle, a small town girl's ambition are the catch words of the movie.

This Ram Gopal Verma movie made a star out of Urmila who until then was a average actress. Mili (Urmila) is a small town girl who wants to make it big as a actress in Bollywood. Munna is a small time black marketeer and Mili's neighbour is in love with Mili but doesn't realize it until something knocks him.

Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff) is a superstar in Hindi Movies and is adored by all including Mili. He is the star of the nation. After some tragedy on home front he has become a bit aloof. Once he spots Mili on a beach where Mili is dancing and asks her to act in a movie opposite her. Mili can't believe but then she is signed by Raj Kamal for his next movie. Munna is a simpleton who believes whatever they show in the movie are true. He thinks Mili is in love with Raj Kamal. Hence, he start ignoring Mili, and this disturbs Mili a lot. When she tells Raj Kamal that he loves Munna, Raj Kamal is shattered but like a true lover makes way for Munna for Mili. And the love story ends here.

A nice movie by RGV, the movie was a super-hit as most of the common people saw themselves in Munna. The story looked very real. All the songs including the background score, direction, cinematography was outstanding. This was an out and out Urmila movie but then Aamir was also upto mark.

'Rangeela' means 'colourful' or 'colourful one' in Hindi but this film was entitled Bollywood Dreams at my local library where I rented it. I liked it but felt that some scenes should have either been edited out or have not been included at all. Once the premise was set and all the characters fell into place, at times the movie just seemed to drag on.

Okay, here's the story. Urmila's character is a girl with a great bod and big dreams. She wants to be a star. She dreams it every night and one day, her dreams come true when she is spotted dancing on a beach a a big Bollywood action hero (played by Jackie Schroff). But this sucks for her longtime pal and childhood bud (played by Aamir Khan) because he is secretly in love with her and now that she has her big break, he knows that her being with Schroff's character all the time will complicate things. But, if you know your Bollywood sappiest films, then you know how this is going to end. Everything is pretty much predictable but it's a nice, cute film.

The songs are exceptional for its time, especially the Asha Bhonsle addictive 'Rangeela' number. I also liked the Kavita Krishnamurthy number too. AR Rahman did a good job as usual on the soundtrack.

But let's just try and forget about that flying sofa above the NYC skyline scene. :(

With Rangili "Urmila" dancing tirelessly every quarter of an hour, this movie is a feast from frame 1 to the end. Excellent performances by both Aamir and Urmaila produce some enchanting moments but it is the underplayed role by Jackie that goes to make this movie a complete entertainer. The music by A.R. Rahman is one of its own kind.

    A must see.

I didn't know I was missing something until I saw this movie. Ram gopal verma has changed his genre often from love triangle, crime, horror and documentary but Rangeela has a special place among them. Urmila was seduction personified, she danced live a swan while great styling and cinematography added to the charm. Amir khan showed his early shades of tapoori(low-life bum) acting in this movie which was funny at the same time heart warming, later he acted in Ghulam on the similar lines. Jackie can't dance but this is more than compensated by his acting.

Another aspect of the movie are songs and their execution which is even more pleasing to watch than the movie itself. I must watch for any Hindi movie buff and also for a peek into early works for Ram Gopal verma.

RGV who now does nonsense mostly did some great films till COMPANY and SARKAR

RANGEELA is a true funny movie and a nice romantic movie too

The film also at it's times was perhaps the first movie to show bollywood digs which is now done to death and the digs are damn funny

Even the characterization of Aamir and his love to Urmila is fantastic The film is handled brilliantly only it dips in between with too many songs especially in the second half and also too many sleazy shots of Urmila which were shocking then but it was forgiven too then The climax too is brilliant

Direction by RGV is brilliant Music is a winner Amongst actors Aamir got a huge turning point in this movie, though he was always praised in films like JJWS, QSQT, DIL in between 1993- 1995 after HHRPK he started getting many flops which include the one of the top comedies ANDAZ APNA APNA(1994) where too his comic act was praised but RANGEELA gave him a big hit and he got praised for his role The best part is the way he grabs the nuances of the role and makes a tapori role seem his second skin He is outstanding Urmila too does a good job though at times too over enthusiastic Jackie Shroff however has a shorter role and he does it well but his looks(perhaps now) don't suit the superstar tag Amongst rest Avtar Gill is funny, Achyut Podar is likable and so is Reema Lagoo rest are good too

It's a shame no-one has yet written about this movie. So, I am giving it a shot.

Needless to say, the songs in the movie are great, and the movie was a big part of what I think was Urmila's short-lived comeback. Jackie Shroff is adequate is his role as the unhappy-in-real-life mega star. Anyone without a bias would easily agree the star of the show, in more ways than one, is Aamir Khan. This comment comes in a significant few years after the actual movie, but Aamir Khan has proved himself (AGAIN!) that he is, in my opinion, the best actor in the Hindi film industry, past and present. The chocolate-boy from Qayamat Se Qayamt Tak, has long-shed his image as such, and defies logic by playing roles that, at first glance, seem impossible for someone with his looks to accomplish. If you think his performances in Sarfarosh and Lagaan were great, I think the clincher is this movie, simply because the role is so different. The seemingly happy-go-lucky character with no worry in the world, could not have been played better, be it by the so-called superstar Shahrukh Khan, or by the great Amitabh Bachchan. The only person who could have pulled off this role convincingly is the aging South Indian star Kamalhasan.

The movie by itself is a simple love story about the aspirations of a wannabe actress, played by the resurgent Urmila Matondkar, who with the assistance of an unknown mega star (played by Jackie Shroff) and an unselfish, unassuming poor friend (played by Aamir Khan), makes it big in Bollywood. Needless to say, the love triangle surfaces, and one of the two guys plays a martyr in this sacred triangle. Music by AR Rahman is sensational and the direction is simply superb. The movie is a great mix of comedy and drama, and is simply three hours of fun.

My recommendation - WATCH IT if you haven't already. On behalf of the millions who have watched it, I think it is safe to say, you will go back to it again when you want to feel good.

Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Varma (who has made very good and very bad films) is a pretty good musical movie to watch with the family.

Even though the movie had some faults, like a typical and predictable storyline along with some editing mistakes, there were still some good things in this film.

First off, the film itself is clean and more of a family film. It has some pretty funny comedic scenes and I'm sure a lot of kids would enjoy it.

Second, the performances. Urmila Matondkar, who the film is focused on, does a pretty decent and convincing job, and also danced well in the songs. Jackie Shroff had an average performance, his performance was a typical Jackie Shroff performance. Aamir Khan, however, did a great job. In this film he played one of the first tapori street thug type of characters in Bollywood history, and he did very well. He fit in to his character to the finest and maintained the accent and style of his character throughout the film, which is very hard to do. It wows me that this is the same man who was in Andaz Apna Apna the year before. He stole the show for me.

And last, A.R. Rehman's soundtrack. This was one of his finest soundtracks, and all the songs, from "Rangeela Re" to "Yaaron Sun Lo Zaara" were all very melodious, catchy, and overall good songs which helped the film.

Overall this film is a nice film to watch with the family and to watch for Aamir Khan's classic performance.

Ram Gopal Varma's movies are either really good or really bad. This one lies right in between, but leans more towards the former category. That being said, expect a lot of naach-gaana.

But the movie does full justice to its title- it is "rangeela" in many ways: whether its the situations, characters, songs or even its outfits.

Urmila entertains as the ambitious Mili, an aspiring actress. Aamir Khan is lovable as the boisterous, rough and carefree Munna (but a softie at heart). This is probably one of his most lovable characters. He carries off the role effortlessly, whether its his walk, his tapori accent or his crazy outfits. Gulshan Grover is hilarious as the crazed director inspired by Hollywood, who explodes "Spielberg wouldn't approve of this!" many times throughout the movie. A special mention to the actor that plays Mili's father - he was so cute.

What I like is that the lead pair is very unconventional and unexpected, their relationship has some sweet moments that are depicted well. There's nothing really cheesy as well. Although its a love triangle, its handled in a more straightforward way. Although Jackie Shroff utters barely two sentences in the first half of the film, he gets more screen space in the second half and the viewer understands his character better.

Are there flaws? Yes. The movie could have been edited better, as the second half seems never- ending. The songs also pop up too soon in the second half. The music is catchy, "Tanha Tanha" and "Rangeela Re" are my picks.

Overall, good for a one time watch!

Rangeela is one of the best Hindi films. Everything worked perfect for this film. Story, acting, direction, dialogues, music - all perfect. The film has a simple story about a girl and her dreams to make it big in the film industry. But, the way it has been executed by RGV is exceptional. Urmilla delivered great performance and looked her best. The comedy by Aamir Khan is incredible and makes you laugh even today. Hats off to the dialogues by Sanjay Chell. Jackie Shroff does a great job in his role. Special mention to the music - It is one of Rahman's best. Ever green songs which still sounds fresh. Rahman could never reproduce this kind of music ever again or he never got the opportunity. RGV made a different film than his usual genre and it worked out so well that this is easily one of his best works. This film has some supporting characters which people will never forget like pakkya and the waiter at hotel

It's an amazing romantic comedy film with a fine music, with an interesting storyline, with a great performance by actors.

Some words about the plot. Funny guy Munna (Aamir Khan) lives next door to the Mili's (Urmila Matondkar) family. Munna spends a lot of time with Mili. Mili is discussing with Munna all her joys and problems. Munna is an orphan He earns his livelihood selling movie tickets in the black market. Mili finds occupation as a movie extra and she has ambitions of becoming an actress. Once good luck smiled at her and she gets the heroine's role in new movie. She starts spending a lot of time with a movie star Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff) during the filming. Raj and Munna both fall in love for Mili, but Mili is too busy making the movie to notice any of this...

For whom this film? This movie is for all who love good romantic comedies, nice music, Indian films and of course for all who love Aamir Khan.

A street-toughened orphan by the name of Munna (Aamir Khan) is befriended by some kind folks, whose effervescent daughter Mili (Urmila Matondkar) soon grows to be his best buddy. Both gravitate toward the Mumbai movie industry. While Mili finds occupation as a movie extra, Munna earns his livelihood selling movie tickets in the black market.

Mili has ambitions of becoming an actress. Fortune glances her way, when she dances her way into a movie star's attentions. This actor, Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff), arranges for her to be auditioned for the heroine's role in his upcoming movie called Rangeela. Mili's shortcomings amount to distractions, but thanks in no small way to Munna and Raj, she lands the role.

The Plot idea of "Rangeela" is not original.. its Bollywood inspired by Bollywood itself.

Any guesses ? Well Year -1970 Movie - Mere Humsafar.. only difference here is in the old movie the director played by non other but Balraj Sahini has his eye on the lady and woes to win her, make her career etc., while the poor village boy (Jeetendra) almost looses her to the film world & glamor..

    Plot very similar and identical..

Incidentally there is another Aamir Khan movie again inspired by an old blockbuster movie of 1971 and that's Caravan again starring Jeetendra, and the movie is "Mela", but that attempt was a failure, as the Original was too good.

This film was sorely in need of a ruthless editor, not unlike most Bollywood movies, and ran far too long. The musical numbers were too many and largely uninspired or, like the desert scene, made no sense. Additionally, Urmilla Matondkar, the star, is not a very good dancer. Rangeela was also sloppily made; in my copy, one scene was clipped before Jackie Shroff had finished speaking. While the three principal characters were sympathetically portrayed, the supporting cast, especially Mili's father and brother, was largely dreadful. For this American viewer, who has seen some powerful Indian dramas and some delightful musicals, Rangeela proved a great disappointment.
