Pyotr Mamonov was director Pavel Lungin's only choice to play Father Anatoli. Mamonov, who lives in a village, refused at first but after "a very long time", turned to their village priest for advice. The priest said, "Don't even think, this is your work. Go ahead!"
This movie is the closing film of 2006 Venice Film Festival.
