Short summary

Made in wartime and edited in candlelight, Mikhail Vartanov's rarely-seen masterpiece tells about his friendship with the genius Sergei Parajanov who was imprisoned by KGB "at the peak of his artistic power". Vartanov takes us back with the scenes from his censored 1969 film The Color of Armenian Land where Paradjanov is at work on his suppressed chef-d'oeuvre The Color of Pomegranates - widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time - and contrasts it with the shocking request Parajanov sent him in unpublished 1974 letters from the Soviet prisons. Vartanov's camera documents Parajanov's striking last day at work in 1990 during the making of the unfinished Confession - the original camera negative of which survives in Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) - as Parajanov comments on this cherished autobiographical work. A monumental wordless montage - the entire sixth reel - concludes Vartanov's acclaimed documentary, his final film, and his most important work, which, despite ...

Mikhail Vartanov arrived in United States with only one possession - the single 35mm print in existence of Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992). National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. held the film's American premiere. Francis Ford Coppola later wrote that the film "exemplifies the power of art over any limitations."

Made the list of the most interesting Soviet documentaries (1926-1996) compiled by the Russian film historian L. Dzhulay. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese also praised the film in writing.

Holds the record of winning the first and the only Russian Academy of Cinema Arts Award for a film made in Armenia; the Russian Academy Award is the top professional film honor (in the region of the former Soviet countries). Tonino Guerra, the screenwriter of Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni masterpieces, attended the Russian premiere of Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) and later praised the film in writing.

Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) includes the original camera negative of Sergei Paradjanov's last unfinished film, Khostovanank (1990), and turned out to be the last film made by Mikhail Vartanov too.

The final installment in Mikhail Vartanov's documentary trilogy, which also includes Tsvet armyanskoy zemli (1969) and Minas: Rekviem (1989)

A bootleg was illegally screened in Budapest, Hungary on 12 October 1997.

Actress Sofiko Chiaureli, Jean Vigo's daughter (the film critic) Luce Vigo, and Jean Carzou's son (the author) Jean-Marie Carzou, attended a European screening of Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) that was one of Mikhail Vartanov's last public appearances.

A private screening of Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) was organized for Allen Ginsberg by Jonas Mekas in 1995 at the Anthology Film Archives. During the screening Ginsberg shed a tear.

Mikhail Vartanov didn't witness the first retrospective and exhibition of his films and art which was held at the Busan International Film Festival merely 3 years after the director's passing.

Someone wrote that nobody can describe Paradjanov because he was unique man and artist. I am in love with Paradjanov and I want write and describe his movies everyway even if is wrong. I was very happy to see Last Spring film because I understood life and movies of Paradjanov more greatly. I never see Confession by Paradjanov and I was sad to know he couldn't finish it. Last Spring is shocking, amazing, beautiful. Wow from Seoul!!!!!!!!!!

I don't remember the last time I wanted to see a documentary twice but I am a film student and this highly unusual documentary was completely inspirational and changed me greatly. It was really wonderful to watch Paradjanov working on the set, see those fantastic collages of Mona Lisa he made and find out about the horrors of his imprisonment. Not a typical documentary though, feels like a movie, like a dream. The ending almost made me cry, it is a genius ending. 9/10

I saw this film many years ago in Sweden. I was really moved by it and my girlfriend was crying when it ended. Everyone stood up and applauded. We didn't know about Sergei Paradjanov before that but later watched many of his films. My favourite part is the famous montage at the end and also when they show him shooting The Colour of Pomegranates. The prison part is just really excellent also. I think Last Spring documentary is one of greatest documentaries I have seen, my other favourites are the Man with Movie Camera by Vertov, Nanook by Flaherty, controversial Olympia by Riefenstahl, and Sorrow and Pity by Marcel Ophüls.
