One of the greatest movie in KOLLYWOOD. Superb cinematography and as well as a great Acting. Vimal proved that he is a veteran actor by this movie. Really a heart touching film by director Sarkunam. After "kalavani" a great come back for this spectaculars director and actor. Actress Iniya performed very well and she lightened up the film by her tremendous performance. A must watch film. As well as the background music is superb and this is a great performance that ever made by a debut except Sir. A.R.Rahman. Great job by Vimal, Sarkunam, Ghibran and Vairamuthu. India is in a need of these kind of films. This might be the greatest time to avoid Masala movies. Fianancial problem is the main problem for these kind of films. Usually these kind of films be a Blockbuster Bomb or an average hit. I don't know why people refuse best movies like this. If this happen again and again no one can stop Kollywood being label as "Much Worst Film industry in the world".

    Vaagai Sooda Vaa(U)---------------Rating: 5/5

It is romantically documentary film.... songs and music were up-to a new standard.... children cast was awesome and movie theme was great as sandy village... It is an enjoyable flick which ends with an message....

ALL must watch movie.... i missed this for a long....now i got time to watch.....

Vimal was sent by his father to do social service in a village. But later, he gets a good job.

The highlight of the movie is Gibran's musical score. The songs are tuned differently and strike a chord with the listeners. Cinematography adds strength to the story. Omprakash's lens has captured the dry lands of Pudukottai at its best.

On the flip side, a docu-feel and slow unfolding of events may mar the proceedings. However it is a good attempt indeed.

"Vaagai Sooda Vaa" deals with a heavy subject but presented in a very subtle manner yet makes a powerful impact on the viewers , therein lies the brilliance of the writer-director Sargunam. Marxist ideals & views are the basic thread of the story but it is more covertly portrayed rather than being on the face jingoism of the same.

Not only the Marxist views that the director has touched upon , but other issues like how the education system doesn't make an educated person a man of wisdom .The village illiterate elders as well as kids have more intelligence in matters of activities of daily living than the so called educated lot. But all the same he has also touched upon how education is vital for one's understanding of his position in the societal ladder & how one is exploited by the bourgeoisie.

The pleasant love story that form the backdrop of the narration is tastefully portrayed & here again Sargunam scores in the "subtlety" . The song "Naan pesa ninapathellam" is so brilliantly used to take forward the love story & it's appearance towards the end of the movie will sure give goose-flesh.

The dialogs are simple yet full of meaning. As said earlier there is no sermonizing or lecturing on the topic taken. The points to be taken home are conveyed in a more understated yet clever fashion.

Another brilliant aspect of the movie is the art-direction . Sabu Cyril's erstwhile assistant Seenu has done a tremendous job in recreating the 60's village & era. The landscape , the props used , the village , vehicles , money , letter , pen ..... attention to details that the production team has shown is fabulous .

Cinematography of Om Prakash is yet another cornerstone of the movie. Special mention regarding the picturization of the song "Saara saara saara kathu" . It is one of the most elegantly pictured song in recent times.

Music director Gibran's songs are already a huge hit. "Saara saara saara kathu" in Chinmayi's voice & Vairamuthu's verses is a killer. The song is so addictive . Not far behind is "Poraane poraane" & "Senga soola kaara" numbers.

Vimal once again showcases his dexterity in his job. His casual dialog delivery & effortless portrayal with his elegant body language makes one confident that there are still talent out there & future is looking bright.

Iniya is yet another promising find from the God's own country. Heroine of a Tamil movie never looked so pretty with absolutely no make-up whatsoever. Her eyes speak thousand languages & her expressions are captivating.

Among others Bhagyaraj, Thambi Ramaiah , Kumaravel , Ponvannan , Thennavan , Nambiraj & the other unknown debut actors & children all have done more than a worthy job & are one of the pillars of the movie.

On the whole , "Vaagai Sooda Vaa " is a movie that satiates the movie buff in you.

    Bottomline : World class cinema.

The movie was actually a box-office failure and one of the most underrated films of Tamil Cinema. After Mr.Sarkunam's directional debut in Kalavani, he pairs up with actor Vimal (known for Pasanga,Kalavani, Thoonga Nagaram).

Story *(Some spoilers)* The movie takes place in 1966. It starts off with Vimal watching a movie in the theaters when suddenly, a bird hunter shoots the theater screen because the lead actor in the movie was getting beaten up by the villain. Then he goes home and his father requests him to take a job in a village to teach poor children, so that he can get a certificate for a government job. Then we get our opening song to introduce the village. This is just amazing. I don't want to go any further with the story. Watch the movie for yourself. It's setting, cinematography, music, acting, it's all amazing.

Positive: Extraordinary cinematography, Great music and background score, Realistic detailing, Epic story, Great performance by the whole cast

    Negative: Painful slow pace

    Final score: (9.5/10)

Post 2000, Tamil cinema has shown that cinema is not all about stardom but it is all about story and screenplay. Continuing the trend Vaagai Sooda Sa is definitely a brilliant movie. Adapting a concept of education for children , director Sargunam has sculptured the screenplay of the movie in such a way that the movie is entertaining as well as informative. Songs are sweet to hear and 'Sara Sara' song stays in your heart for the actress reactions.

Tamil industry has produced brilliant directors off late and Sargunam is on the list to glory.

Vaagai Sooda Va :- is a must watch

In his very first film Kalavani, director Sarkunam proved that he is a film maker with a potential. And in Vaagai Sooda Vaa, he continues to reiterate this fact as he narrates his tale adhering to a rural milieu set in 1966.

Vaagai Sooda Vaa is a tribute to teachers and tells the story of young man who is trained to teach and waiting for a government job which in those days was a highly revered commodity. The incidents that unfold when he comes to a village involved in making bricks and the shape that his dreams take on, become the base on which Sarkunam builds his story.

Vaagai Sooda Vaa works big time due to the brilliant detailing of Sarkunam and team, art director Seenu, cinematographer Om Prakash and music director Ghibran.

Sarkunam's research is evident in the numerous articles of 1966 from the transistor, its announcements, the alum used during shaving to the bar soap being cut by thread. And he has also brought out the traditions of people living in that period through the 'oppari' and the customs during a death ceremony. Sarkunam's eye for perfection is palpable when Vimal walks with a limp after he is attacked although his limp does not form part of the core of the sequence at all.

Credible characters and a fairly good screenplay are the positive components of VSV. In the performance department, debutante Iniya is a worthy find and cruises through emotions. The scene where she breaks into a pompous jig in front of Vimal's hut and where she expresses her disappointment on knowing Vimal's intentions speak about the girl's potential. Of course, her body language in a few instances is contemporary which could have been avoided.
