"Mail Call" is another great episode of "Combat!", with a good story. What are the news that have affected Saunders is only disclosed near the end. Trenton's cowardice is known since the beginning when he displaces his knee and explains his scar on the face. My vote is nine.

This classic WW 2 series always has the advantage of a solid regular cast. Vic Morrow and Rick Jason are very good actors. In the case of this one James Best is one of the guest stars.

This particular episode features some good drama. There is a bit of mystery as Sgt Saunders receives a seemingly shocking piece of mail at mail call. It seems to alter his mood and his unit notices it. Then guest Best arrives as a replacement.

The unit welcomes him but he always seems to hurt himself when it comes time to go on patrol. Then comes the time for the whole unit to go out and Saunders decides Best is going despite a knee problem. Then the unit walks into a Nazi trap after accomplishing their mission.

There is some archive stock footage of actual Nazi tanks from the war rumbling through used in the show.

"Mail Call" addresses the subject of hypochondria and I imagine there were some hypochondriacs on our side in WW 2. The only problem is too much of the episode lacks action and action is the essence of the Combat TV series.

Interaction among the regular squad members keeps the story moving but a group of GI's showing their excitement at the mail jeep's arrival or Saunders in shock after reading his letter generally does not cut it.

Poor Bernie McEveety is an action director and Mail Call lacks significant action for most of the episode.

Private Meredith Trenton (well played by James Best) is looking for a good squad to settle with and he likes White Rook. Best is an excellent character actor and one with less ability would have put this episode in the doldrums.

While on patrol Private Trenton finally comes to terms when forced into a difficult and dangerous confrontation in the presence of "Doctor" Saunders, and we have a happy ending with excellent combat action.
