Rena, the original artistic force at Girlfriends Films, seems to have a thing for the seamier side of sex, hardly the girly romantic clinches one associates with lesbian cinema. Her apotheosis, coming in the early days of the label over a decade ago, is "Lesbian Hospital", a tongue-in-cheek yet grueling exercise I found more off-putting than arousing.

It is a direct throwback, if not homage, to those famous white-coaters circa 1969/1970 that paved the way for public exhibition of XXX porn movies. Dr. Peggy and her faithful nurse companion Nicole (Moore) woman-handle hapless patients seeking the secrets of frequent and consistent orgasms, with Dr. Lena (Ramon) appearing later on with her victim as an even dodgier doc who wouldn't know a Hippocratic oath from a Hippopotamus.

Main victim is the luscious Nikki, a top star of the label's first releases (and appropriately cast since she's an alumna of fetish videos). Dr. Peggy treats her to nipple pumps (and a clit pump for good measure), thermometer that goes in the vagina not just the rectum, and plenty of other outré equipment. Shot in yucky tight closeups this is strictly for that tiny band of "medical instruments" fetishists, who have been serviced in recent years by pornographers ranging from England's cult fave Tanya Hyde to current star actress/director hyphenate Dana Vespoli.

Dr. Lena has Mia to play with, and in a return visit from that glutton for punishment, director Rena gives away her game by having Lena play it way over the top -her acting controlled but the outrageous escalation of BDSM techniques and increasingly lame excuses for what she's doing straining credibility past the breaking point. When Lena performs an "examination" using a strap-on dildo I was wishing this video could be projected as a midnight movie at my local Chelsea cinema where "Mommie Dearest" fans could get off communally on the silliness of it all.

Likewise, when she is not pontificating in voice-over for the "educational" content of the program, including the usual, lame and misleading descriptions of "female ejaculation" which in the form of Golden Showers are a Girlfriends staple, at least in the early days when still something of a novelty, Dr. Peggy strips to have sex with her patient, hardly a white-coater-approved behavior. Of course Nicole is even more suspect, a constant predator in her more mainstream video appearances.

Final patient Mary Jane is a pleasant Alicia Silverstone type who has to put up with a huge vibrator/dildo device. I would have liked to see her in a conventional sex scene, as here the actual sex is mechanical (often literally) and without any emotion or connection. Despite having coughed up a sequel several years later (which I am obliged to watch), this particular turn in the road for Girlfriends proved to be a dead end.
