Short summary

The historical documentary about the life of Warsaw Jews presented in five acts.
The purpose of this documentary is to present the vibrant life, people and culture of the Jewish community in Warsaw for the 1,000 years leading up to the pre-World War II period, to the extermination of Warsaw Ghetto, to Janusz Korczak's last days. The film examines historical sites and the world of Polish Jewry. Historical documentary includes black & white and color sequences divided into five acts: Aleph - History, Bet - Faith, Gimmel - Theater, Daleth - Growing-up, He - concern. Every act shows a different aspect of life. Historical footage is intertwined with contemporary pictures of the same places. Many of the pictures are popular and were obtained from archives; however, some are unknown and include unique footage such as the veterans of the Polish - Russian war from 1920. The veterans are shown in front of the Great Synagogue on Tlomackie Street with the chief rabbi of the Polish Army, Colonel Steinberg, who was killed with Polish and Jewish officers at Katyn in 1941 by ...

The film is dedicated to the inhabitants of Jewish cities, villages and shtetls which no longer exist.

The movie got the Award by The Fifth Annual Jewish Video Competition in Berkeley, California, May 1998, organized by Director Bill Chayes and sponsored by The Judah Magnes Museum in Berkley California, USA.

Daniel J. Strehlau received his award in person during the Awarding Ceremony in Berkeley, Ca. At that time he asked him self a question, why in Warsaw, Poland there is no such Jewish Video Competition. In the same year, 1998 he attended to organize in Warsaw, Poland together with Michal Bilewicz from JIDELLE Jewish magazine the first screening of the Jewish movies in Yiddish from Polish National Film Archive. The screening didn't take place, because of finance problems. Finally in 2003, Daniel J. Strehlau organized on the free market rules, the first ever Jewish Film Festival in East Europe - Warsaw Jewish Film Festival

Unfortunately, after spectacular success of the Festival, the Festival and its organizer was ignored, persecuted and stalked in Poland.

Daniel J. Strehlau got the letter with the thanks for his documentary from Mr. Shimon Peres in 2002, after the meeting with Mr. Peres, Prime Minister of Israel, who got Strehlau's movies.

Daniel Strehlau did get the letter from Mr. Shimon Peres, Prime Minister of State of Israel, after the documentaries THE JEWS OF WARSAW and HANUKKAH A DOUBLE TIME were given to Mr. Prime Minister, after the meeting of Mr. Prime Minister Shimon Peres with Daniel Strehlau.

After the meeting with Mr. Prime Minister Shimon Peres, Prime Minister of State of Israel, Daniel Strehlau has got the letter with the thanks from Mr. Peres, after the documentaries THE JEWS OF WARSAW and HANUKKAH A DOUBLE TIME were given to Mr. Prime Minister in 2002.

Daniel J. Strehlau got the card with the thanks for his documentary from The White House after the copy of the movie was handed to the First Lady during the visit of US President and his wife in Lauder Morasha Jewish School in Warsaw, Poland in May 2001.
